Basically you can buy the brush knots individually for very affordable prices at The Golden Nib. International shipping isn't available on the shopping cart, but you can email your order and get a quote for shipping to Canada:

Then you just need to either make your own handle like jockeys, or find one in an antique store for cheap and gut it like I did. I posted my results here -- 22mm silvertip for about $35 total:

Awesome idea commiecat. And I like what you did with that brush. Maybe I'll keep my eye out for an old brush, and just focus on one that has a nice handle, and then gut it, like you suggested. Geez, I wish I still had my little lathe. I'd love to turn some handles. And now that I have a lot time on my hands, I am itching to create. I also have some experience with pottery. And leather work too! So making some starter strops might be something else to consider.
I know I'm not healthy enough to work full time. I can except that...for now. But I NEED to do something! Getting a little stir crazy.

Anyhow, thanks for the tip. That seems like a great way to get a really decent brush, and just the way you want the brush to look , too.

LOL. Wouldn't that be something if they said, 'nope, sorry, no ship to Canada'.
Thanks DP. I haven't looked at that site in awhile. I was thinking of getting a finishing stone from them at some point. They have a 12k water stone, that's under 40 bucks, and I remember the site said something about not being discouraged by the low price, as it's one of their best sellers, and they've had good reviews on the stone. I wish they carried Lynn's DVD. That would be great if a Canadian site carried it, but I think I'll have to hold off until tax refund time, where I lan to get a package deal from SRD including that hot little DVD everyone is raving about......or "a-boat", as we Canadians apparently say. Or is it "a-boot"?

I made a vid of my shave, and at the end (last post or so) there is a another youtube video of a goatee shaver as well. In the videos section of the general forum.

But as a general rule, us goatee shavers need to remember the words to the old song:

"Heel and toe, heel and toe!
    Slide slide slide slide!"

    I have a goatee, here's how I do it-

On the WTG passes on cheeks going N-S, I don't worry so much about being close to the goatee line.

On the XTG passes going E-W, I start with the ear and then let the razor run into the goatee. The goatee hairline stops the razor for me (need a light touch).

When I'm done with my ATG passes, I then go back to the goatee, put a bit of lather around the edges, lay the spine on the beard, with the edge along the line, and shave away from the hairline like the XTG passes but going the other way.

I don't try using the tip of the razor going N-S to trim-- I tried this a few times and didn't get a consistant line (plus too many nicks...).

How do other folks do it?

    -Chief
