Out of curiosity, what vendor is supplying the razor you're looking at? That might clear up whether your razor is really shave ready or not.

They are not made any more as far as I know, but there are plenty of good ones being listed on ebay. Look for names such as DublDuk, Shumate, Swaty, Keen Kutter, ItsaPeach and there are many others. Lynn has a youtube video around here somewher that goes into plenty of detail about barber hones. It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Barber's hones are no longer commercially available. I think that should be explained better when someone recommends them. You'd have to check our classifieds here or Ebay. A popular name of Barber's hone is Swaty. You'll here it often. There are also many others. They are normally small, and fit in the palm of your hand. Normally, you'd give the blade 3-5 passes on it prior to stropping. It prolongs the shave readiness of your blade....I'll have to check through my stuff and see if I have one or two I want to sell....

Thanked: 2I decided instead of buying the ebony dovo razer,
I'm going to buy, for about the same price, 2 dovo 'best quality' razors (they come shave ready), I actually like the 'sober' look and I'm sure I can get a very decent shave from them.
Also gonna get some oil to put on the blades.
I might stick with the dovo russian strop since there is quite a possibility I'll nick/cut it, so I don't wanna go overboard on a strop, and I think the dovo strop might do a decent job.
I might still consider buying The Different Scent: "Old Traditional natur" strop, but it has no linen side, somehow I'm taking a liking in the linen side based on what I've read.
Ive been reading around the forum how long a razor might last without honing and only stropping on the leather and/or linen side, I find this an interesting subject.
I'm gonna use a brush I got lying around here, actually seems pretty decent.
So I'm going to start out with buying 2 shave ready razors and a strop.
If all is going well I might go on the lookout for a "finish hone", in case anyone got a good barbers hone lying around and is willing to part with it, I might surely be interested .
thanks all for the advice, I'd be lost without it,
it's greatly appreciatedLast edited by penguins87; 11-02-2009 at 02:08 PM.

Thanked: 1903Actually, I would not go for either, nor a Nakayama. Take a look at the Tony Miller strops (and the practice strops), as well as those sold by Straight Razor Designs (with their replaceable parts). The rest is in http://straightrazorpalace.com/newbi...beginners.html (as you have noticed already ).

Yes you can, I did. You have to send him an email (can't use the shopping cart). His service was impeccable, his goods, even better. Get the practise strop.

Thanked: 2haha ok final thoughts here,
I think I might go with the "SRD 2" RED LATIGO STROP AND WEBBED FABRIC" strop, it looks very nice.
Just to be clear, webbed fabric is like a 'linen side' ? ;O
