Thread: All Stainless in Barbicide?

I couldn't find anything conclusive from searching, so I've decided to try my luck with a new thread.

Would an all stainless steel straight (one of the new dovos) stand up to barbicide? I've been looking at different sterilization methods and figured aside from taking it apart and autoclaving it after every shave, which seems a wee bit excessive to me, soaking in barbicide would be effective and simple.

The question is, what (if anything) will the barbicide do to the razor? Someone said the scales on their Wapi were stained brown but not the blade, I've heard mention of the edge deteriorating. I'd really like to use the barbicide method, enough so that I'd be willing to build a straight for that purpose; is all stainless good enough?

I have an antique barbicide jar that was given to me by a friend, and I really want to use it since he has passed and no longer can.

Why soak it in barbicide after every shave?
If you are really paranoid, i would think wiping it down with 70% Alcohol after your shave would do the trick

I have to agree. If you are the only one using it, I don't really see the point in sterilizing it after every shave. Incidentally, the Wapis were actually made out of all steel in order to be autoclaved after every use.

If you are bent on shaving with a sterile blade, you might consider something like those toothbrush sterilizers, you know, high power UV light to kill all the germs.

It's less paranoia and more wanting to use this old barbicide jar. It was given to me by the man who introduced me to straight shaving and I wanted to have a reason to use it. If an all ss razor can stand the barbicide, why not? If it will damage the razor then I'll let this idea slide.

I am talking about soaking the razor. What will the barbicide soak do to it if it's all stainless?

Be aware that Barbicide will remove all plating from the razor.

First it depends on the razor, and the steel, but most likely it will turn it black.... It can also turn some of the older scales some funny colors....

SS razors are not like SS scissors the make up of the steel is different some of the steel bangers could tell you why...

One thing that I do know is when it comes to razors, that is actually two words "Stain" "Less" not one word "Stainless" they will rust and will turn black....

The best way to find out though is try it ... You might get lucky

Welcome to SRP. Been there and done that. I don't recommend soaking. I am a professional tattooer and used to use a Weck replaceable blade straight razor to shave the tattoo area before tattooing my customers.

The barbacide will form solid crystals on the razor and unless you add a rust prevenative over time it will rust it. OTOH, IIRC there is a caveat in the instructions on the jug to change it every 24 or maybe it is 48 hours. It's been a long time since I used it but for shaving only you sterilization is not something I would be concerned with.
