Thanked: 0All Stainless in Barbicide?
I couldn't find anything conclusive from searching, so I've decided to try my luck with a new thread.
Would an all stainless steel straight (one of the new dovos) stand up to barbicide? I've been looking at different sterilization methods and figured aside from taking it apart and autoclaving it after every shave, which seems a wee bit excessive to me, soaking in barbicide would be effective and simple.
The question is, what (if anything) will the barbicide do to the razor? Someone said the scales on their Wapi were stained brown but not the blade, I've heard mention of the edge deteriorating. I'd really like to use the barbicide method, enough so that I'd be willing to build a straight for that purpose; is all stainless good enough?
I have an antique barbicide jar that was given to me by a friend, and I really want to use it since he has passed and no longer can.
Input is greatly appreciated, this is my first post although I have been lurking in the shadows for a little while. THANKS!

Thanked: 1262This is a razor you are shaving yourself with, correct?
Why soak it in barbicide after every shave?
If you are really paranoid, i would think wiping it down with 70% Alcohol after your shave would do the trick

I have to agree. If you are the only one using it, I don't really see the point in sterilizing it after every shave. Incidentally, the Wapis were actually made out of all steel in order to be autoclaved after every use.
If you are bent on shaving with a sterile blade, you might consider something like those toothbrush sterilizers, you know, high power UV light to kill all the germs.

Thanked: 0It's less paranoia and more wanting to use this old barbicide jar. It was given to me by the man who introduced me to straight shaving and I wanted to have a reason to use it. If an all ss razor can stand the barbicide, why not? If it will damage the razor then I'll let this idea slide.

Thanked: 13250If you are talking about soaking the razor I have a one word piece of advice, DON'T...
If you are talking about dipping the razor, then wiping it off, Cool

Be aware that Barbicide will remove all plating from the razor.

First it depends on the razor, and the steel, but most likely it will turn it black.... It can also turn some of the older scales some funny colors....
SS razors are not like SS scissors the make up of the steel is different some of the steel bangers could tell you why...
One thing that I do know is when it comes to razors, that is actually two words "Stain" "Less" not one word "Stainless" they will rust and will turn black....
The best way to find out though is try it... You might get lucky

Soak overnight or dip for the recommended ten min?
Blade only or blade + scales. With 10,000 types of scale material
who knows how your scales will react.
No one should be sharing a razor today!
There are just too many nasty bugs to swap. Ya know, there is a reason that there are pink and blue razors....
Heck no one should share any part of a shaving kit.
Part of what makes for a good shave is getting the mix of soap, blade, strop etc just right to match the beard and style of the user.
I see 99% isopropyl alcohol in the cabinet over my sink. It makes a good cleaner to wipe protective oil off a razor that has been sitting for a bit. It is what I use on occasion for my personal use only blades of all types. I have an electric kettle and I can tell you that a razor dries very quickly after a rinse with boiling water. The waxy soap build up and other crud melts off the steel.
Barbicide® Plus Disinfectant Liquid does contain a rust inhibitor. You should write them a letter and specify that this is for personal use on old time razors only and ask them. If you have a shave shop the local health inspector rules MUST apply.
I do recall razors hanging in the old blue liquid jars when I was a kid. Most were blade only in the liquid. The razors were open sharp edge pointing in not touching the side and the scales were out of the jar.
There are two questions that I see here:
- I have a cool Barbicide® jar and want to use it. Will it hurt my razor?
- I want to disinfect my razor. What is the best method and does that include Barbicide.
The second question is a serious one. It is important to all of us that pick up second hand razors. It is doubly important to all the folk out there that hone "shave ready" and "shave tested" razors. They need to sanitize the blade on the way in and also on the way out of the shop. The topic of sanitation while shaving does justify a thread of its own and a sticky one at that.
