Thanked: 199Be safe! Shavette sounds like the way to go while you are over there. And when you get back, treat yourself to a nice razor and supplies
Thanks for your service!

This thread needs to get back on track or it will be closed. I have already parked 3 posts and that's enough. Thank you.

Thanked: 19Let's keep this shaving related not war related and everyone should be good. Since my post have been parked because ware not shaving related I ask for the same thing in regard to the other posts that simply congratulate the man for going to war and give no advice whatsoever about shaving. I only find this fair.

Thanked: 4Shaving in the field
Alotamoxy, welcome to the SRP. I recommend taking a straight razor. preferably two, to Afghanistan. I don't know what your job is, however, if you end up on a combat outpost don't expect a lot of creature comforts.
Some of the other members made a pretty good topic about shaving in the field here - http://straightrazorpalace.com/newbi...tml#post472810.
Thank you for volunteering to support and defend the Constitution of the United States from all enemies foreign and domestic.
justacat, if you want to discuss just war theory please take it to an off topic forum instead of harassing a new shaver. I also believe there's something about that in the http://straightrazorpalace.com/rules...s-conduct.html.

Welcome to SRP!
If you don't feel that you can take a couple of straight razors and hones with you then a shavette or (better yet IMO) a Feather might be the way to go.
I'm completely unfamiliar with how much time you might have available to you to learn and practice honing or if you would have the ability to send razors back to a honemeister for honing. If you don't think you will have time on your hands or the ability to send a razor back for sharpening then I would go with a disposable blade.
Good luck.

Thanked: 31i would get a tub of shaving cream a good travel brush and a small mirror. break a plastic knife in half and tape one end so it doesnt poke through a plastic bag. and i would take the shavvete and plenty of extra blades they weigh nothing can throw them away and you dont have to carry a strop and hone. and the reson i say the tub of shaving cream is because you can just make the lather in your hand and not having a mug is one less thing the carry unless your going to be on post most of the time.

Thanked: 21In the states, the PX has passable DE blades available. You may be able to get them overseas as well.
Try to pack everything in an airtight container to keep the dirt out- especially from your strop. If you're taking one, I'd almost suggest a synthetic strop, so you can wash it more easily. Take some oil for the blades. I don't think that CLP would be the best plan for that, though it would probably work just fine for keeping the rust off.
If I was going to skimp on anything, it would be the shaving soap- you can get a passable shave from just about any kind of soap. (or, you can get a decent shower from just about any shaving soap.) Creams are right out- tubs and tubes would both break or explode and make a mess.
Be careful.

It all depends on where you will be based. If you will spend most of your time in a camp then you should be able to take everything you need and somethings you don't need but will make your life that little bit more comfortable. If you will be deployed in the field most of the time then in my experience I would say a shavette or feather is the way to go. You will not have the time or the inclination to look after and prepare you razors properly. The most important thing to remember is to stay safe. Good Luck.
