Beginner Notes and Observations
I've not been at it long at all.. however, the begining is the time you are learning the most because you have so much to learn!
1. as you gain confidence early on be carefull about gaining speed...
2. as you gain confidence early don't add pressure
3. mastering stropping is the next big hurdle
4. Pre shave preparation makes all the difference in the world
5. You might need to wait a couple days after a "rough" shave to let
your skin heal or you'll just cut the same places again and again
6. apply the shaving balm more than once a day for sensetive skin
7. If you have an old dull razor... use it to practice stropping
8. Ask a lot of questons and get a lot of good answers
9. If your lather drys before you get to the next section reapply
10.A wet hand towell in the microwave for 30 seconds or so is great heat
11.Get closer to the mirror
12.Take short strokes
14.Don't shave naked..but don't wear a shirt with a colar.. My razor
caught on the collar and flipped out of my hand
15.You can make the hairs stand up by pulling in the opposite direction of
the direction they grow! Thanks Lynn
16.220 grit sand paper will take care of minor nicks on you strop
17.Rub your strop with your palm while watching television
18.You can reapply pre-shave oil or cream
19.A New Straight Razor makes a great Christmas Presnet!!
20.For atg.. hold whiskers in the direction they grow while you shave in the opposite direction....
21.Don't get anxious to shave ATG / XTG.. get comfortable with the razor WTG first

Thanked: 1903Good advice. Only addendum: "You can make the hairs stand up by pulling in the opposite direction of the direction they grow!" For the ATG pass, this might not be the best option. I actually pull i the opposite direction for it. Might be an idiosyncracy, though.
Keep us posted on your progress,
Robin

Please clarify
Maq said you can make the hairs stand up by pulling in the opposite direction of growth - this I agree with, and I do this as well on the rare occasion I shave against the grain
You said you "pull i the opposite direction" - do you mean that you pull in the opposite direction of growth (agreeing with Maq) or that you pull in the opposite direction as Maq which is the same direction of beard growth?Find me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode.
