    Hello folks

I am looking for a cheapish wide strop and was wondering if anyone had used one of these, or knew any reason why I sould avoid it?

I'm bumping this but also adding a question

The canvas on my current strop is looking a tad rustic, how would one clean this? Any ideas?

I don't know anything about that strop, but if you're skeptical about trying it, go with something that has a good reputation and without a huge pricetag. Here is a good link that has a few great suggestions

    Smile cleaning your linen

I restored an old strop that's linen was almost brown. It was pretty simple I took the strop apart and got some dish shop a plastic tub I let it soak for a while (about half an hour to an hour) and started rubbing it on it self and with a plastic scrubber. its not white but its a lot closer. I had heard that this is risky because the linen sometimes shrinks but I never had a problem with that.

For a 3" strap, it would prolly be best to get one from a reputable vendor such as Tony Miller or SRD. Generally, 3" straps tend to "cup" and if you go on the cheap side, that eventuality is more likely.

Weight lifting belt.... Hmmm... could be
the source of good strop material for the
    handy guy.

As long as the top surface is smooth even it should
    make a good hanging strop.

    Howdy

Thanks for all the feedback, I didn't know about cupping, this is not a wonderous thing. I think I'll hunt a little more, and may invest in a paddle strop, I kinda like the idea of them and it gives me summin else to try out doesn't it.

Another option would be a loom strap. I believe you can find them in 3" sizes, or even make your own with the right hardware and a bit of creativity...

Hmmm... if it were me I'd pass. You can buy a Filly strop from RupRazor for much less than that, and rest assured about its quality.

Also, as a beginner, wider is not better. It's important to develop your X-pattern when stropping and having a wide strop can make you lazy about that.

It's a gamble and might encourage bad habits, basically. You can avoid both those problems for equal to lesser money.
