    Talking Travel needs

I travel a lot, and when I travel I tend to be away from home for several weeks at a time.
During these travels I bring two razors, a shaving soap, a twosided strap, an alublock, a travel brush and a travel shaving boul and a soft microfiber towel.

I also bring this: Small bottle of medical grade alcohol.

Now I make sure that my two travel razors are sharp prior to travel, and I make sure they are sterile. And during my travels I have the posibility of keeping my razors sterile and well straped.

At home I make sure the strap, razors and everything is in top condition as soon as I unpack them. That way I know I'll be ready for my next trip.

My recomendation is to keep the farmers motto: Keep the equipment ready, and safe at all times.

(Yes I cut myself from time to time, I'm still new to straight razors. Yes I pack everything nice and safe when I tarvel and yes I store things safely when at home too.)

I guess what I'm trying to say is, think ahead when you might be going away for a while, you'd be surprized at how much you have room for in a little travel case. Don't worry to much about room in your suitcase cause it takes up none at all. And don't bring the razors in your carry on.

Guess I just wanted to come with a travelers advice

When traveling, I just bring one of my disposables/blades, the badger brush, and soap and aftershave balm. The longer I stay, the nicer the disposable straight shavers I bring. This combo doesn't take up much room.

Always do what works best for you.

Razors, soap, mug, strop, witch hazel, stiptic pencil, aftershave. I always bring all of my razors because I keep them in a single case. The selection of soaps and aftershaves I bring depends on the expected lenght of the trip. I bring the stiptic pencil just in case.

I'm not sure why I would bring alcohol (other than what's in the aftershave). I disinfected the razors when I got them, and there is nothing they are likely to have picked up since that I don't already have.

If you had ever seen some of the shabby assed hotells I've stayed at for months on end, due to work... you'd understand the alcohol just to sit on the toiletseat lol

    Hello, NewShaver:

Welcome to SRP. Look around and you'll find tons of information on straight razor shaving.

I see what you mean by taking alcohol along on your trips. Good point.

As a rule this is what I take, weather on a weekend holiday or an extended journey:

    1. Straight razor, Feather straight razor with replaceable blades, and Merkur double edge travel razor. The Feather and the Merkur are for emergency. My travel straight is usually a nice 5/8" Dovo "Pearlex."
    2. Edwin Jagger "super" badger travel brush.
    3. Pre de Province shave cream in a tube.
    4. Some sample packets of shave cream — non lather — in case I have no time to use the brush.
    5. A variety of aftershave lotion in small bottles.
    6. Styptic pencil.
    7. Small bottle of witch hazel.
    8. Assortment of toiletries.
    9. And the most important: a flask of cognac (not to be consumed during the shave, of course, but, rather, for spirit elevation in the afternoon or evening).

The set up works well for me.

(Oh, also my small Tony Miller strop.)

    Regards,

    Obie

    Hello, NewShaver:

Ah, yes, you have the spirit, my good friend. Cognac, flask or bottle, blows sweet breaths on the soul.

By the way, I love that photo you provide through the link in your post. I assume it is an example of your work. You've framed your composition in an introspective mood that mesmerized me. That is great work. Congratulations.

    Regards,

    Obie

I'm headed out in 2 hours for Japan for a week long stay.

I'm bringing 2 straights, a vintage strop, with canvas. Some C&S 88 shave soap, my home made badger brush, alum block, styptic, pre-shave oil(I hardly ever use it, but hey, it was still in there...), some aftershave splash, and some other non-shaving supplies.

I never bring a straight I paid more than $50 for, and I always bring two "just in case".

What do you guys do to pack your strops? Do you wrap them in anything or just plonk them in your suitcase? Mine came wrapped in wax paper, so I think I'll do that when I go away for a couple of weeks soon.

Also check out "parchment paper" at a local cooking store.
It uses a silicon not wax additive and will not muck up some
things the way wax does. Parchment as the inner paper
and common brown paper grocery bag for an outer wrapper.
