So it will arrive on Tuesday...Don't worry though. All the razors sold by Vintage Blades are honed by the founder of SRP, Lynn Abrams. You also did yourself a lot of good by getting Lynn's dvd. I did and it saved my neck--and face.
BTW...Jim Ayars of Vintage Blades is a very nice fellow. I've purchased lots of shaving equipment from him. If you ever have questions about your razor or about another purchase, just send him an email or call him. He responds promptly."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

Better watch out, straights are like potato chips you can't have just one.

Thanked: 22Welcome to SRP! You're in the right place to get all the info and experienced str8 shavers you'll ever need.
Please follow JimmyHAD's advice on reading Lynn's "You're first shave" article. Pay close attention to the part about starting out slow and try shaving only a section at a time in you're first week or two. Do your right or left cheek on the first day and finish up with the razor you're use to. Every day, try moving to a new area. I started out with my right cheek the first day, then both cheeks the next day. I kept stepping up to a new area until I did a complete shave. This allows you time to slowly get use to using the razor and helps you from making a dumb mistake. I think it's a matter of letting things soak into your brain and let it reboot over night for your next attempt. The funny thing is, I didn't read Lynn's "You're first shave" until a couple of weeks into using the str8.
Also, pay close attention to where the blades edge is in reference to your fingers. From time to time, I've read posts by new users of a str8 that have cut thier fingers. Nicks and small cuts are to be expected on your face but you can do a doosie on your finger if you're not carefull. I think it's because you're so carefull and prepared while on your face that you know as soon as you make a mistake. A cut on the finger could be pretty bad because it's usually unexpected and with more force because it's most likely when you're pulling away from or coming up to your face. Don't let this frighten you but it's something you need to be aware of and we sure don't want you to have a bad experience that will shy you away from something so good. Oh yea, watch out for the earlobes too.
Be patient, stick with it and soon you will find yourself actually looking forward to shaving. For me, starting out the day with a str8 razor shave gives me this feeling of accomplishment right off the bat. Not to mention what a great conversational piece it is. The reaction you get from some people when you tell them you shave with a str8 can be quite commical. I had my barber order my first razor. When I told him what I wanted to do, he said "Why in the world do you want to do that...you're going to cut the heck out of yourself". 7 months later, I can honestly say I prooved him wrong. I have yet to cut myself other than a few small nicks which happened all in my first couple of months. It's been quite some time since I've even had a nick.
Once agian, welcome to SRP! and please post any questions you may have on here. It always amazes me at how fast you get replies to answer your questions.Last edited by kcarlisle; 02-13-2010 at 10:57 PM.
