Thanked: 2Thinking from moving from DE shaving
Hello all
I have been a DE shaver for 1 year. I came from Gillette match 3. I love my Merkur HD, but I am thinking about moving to straight razors.
I now nothing about them. Just readed the beginners guide and many other beginner posts.
I like Dovo and Thiers Issard, but I do not know what should I buy for a beginner razor. I read that they need to be honned by a professional before first use.
I will like to receive suggestions on where to buy it and what to buy. Razor has to be already honned and new. I will not like to spend more than 100-125 € in the razor. I will also need a strop.
Thanks a lot for support!!

Thanked: 39A great razor for a beginner is the Dovo "Special" for about $100.00. Just make sure that any razor you buy has been honed by a professional before you use it. You can save yourself a mountain of trouble by doing this. Most new razors do not come "sharp" from the factory.

Thinking From Moving From DE Shaving
Hello, Motero57:
Ccgnet makes good points. Also, start with covering all the information provided at SRP, especially in the Wiki. You need not spend a fortune on your first razor. The Dovo "Special" is as good a start as any. Also, look in the SRP Classified section for a variety of other razors. Good luck.

Obie

A word of cautioni. Many newcomers are tempted to buy their first razor from ebay, especially it they see one that claims to be "shave ready". While some of them, may be, the majority of ebay razors are not, even though they claim to be. Obie's suggestion of checking the SRP classifieds is solid advice. Any razor there that claims to be shave ready, most likely is. Members here, have well-earned reputations and can be trusted.

Hello and welcome.
I think you would be better served to purchase a razor from an experienced member at SRP instead of an online retailer or eBay. You can find something inexpensive with the knowledge that it came from someone who knows what they are doing. It will also give you a low cost entry point into straight shaving which lessens the pain you will feel when you roll the edge on your first blade while you are learning to strop.
This is also why some folks will tell you to buy two cheap razors when first starting out. You will still be able to shave with the second while the first is being re-honed.

If it must be new, and you like Dovo, then I would think the Straight Razor Designs sets are the way to go.
Any Dovo razor is a good one. So don't worry about that.
SRD means good razors, good strops, and the best pro honing money can buy. Can't go wrong, really.

Thanked: 2Thanks MistressNomad, It really does not have to be dovo at all. I also like Thiers Issard. I like a los SRD, but just wanted to find out a closer retailer to Spain. It is not decided yet.
I have been reading also a lot for honning. Is it enough a norton 4.000/8.000 for sharpening my regular razor or do I need something further than 8.000 for finnishing the razor?
