Thanked: 0good idea?
So last night I was sure I was going to waltz onto ebay and quickly buy a straight blaze razor with despoable blades like my barber uses. Hours later after being throughn into a whirwind of cool vintages razors, stropes and boar brushes I think I have a new plan. I plan to buy a vintage razor on ebay based on the brands I've read about here and have it honed by one of the members here offering the service. Does this sound like a better idea?

Ebay is a bit dangerous for newbie since the blades may contain defects that are hard to spot, even if you know what to look for.
You might be better off just getting a shave ready blade off the classifieds or off the reputable seller of new or vintage blades.
Check the shopping list for beginners and the budget guide too. Reading the beginner's guide too is a huge plus.

Thanked: 13249Hmmmmm the second best actually
The classifieds would be the best for a used razor that is already shave ready and tested... preferably by a qualified member
To buy one on e-bay still leaves much to chance...
In fact many of the most senior members, myself included always say the same thing "Don't buy on e-bay for at least 6 months or until you feel confident enough to not have to ask if the razor is good or a good buy"
JMHO

Thanked: 530I would recommend NOT doing that. Not that the members are incapable, but that you are. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OFFENSE TO THAT. What I mean is that, as a beginner, you cannot judge what razors on ebay CAN be restored -Hell, I can't!- even the most veteran members, and best restoration artists on this site can buy a razor they think is restorable, and then be unable to restore it.. I do not mean to offend, but it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to judge, by picture, what is restorable and what isn't. I would recommend going to the Classifieds on this site. There are cheaper razors there than ebay, they are ALL in good condition, and, 19/20 times, if the listing says shave ready, it is shave ready... Ebay is just a crap-shoot, so to speak.
Definitely wait on ebay until you have vastly more experience.
Just my $.02

Thanked: 530See the little pencil on a blank sheet? (Looks like a square with a yellow stick) right next to the "Thanks!" Button? That's the one. It'll make the Quick Reply box usable.
You can also click Post Reply in the far left under the thread window.
Good luck!
