Thanked: 44Soap / Cream Recommendations
I tried Williams soap first, and eventually got the water ratio right so it made shiny thick lather - but it still drys quickly enough that the razor starts to grab even when I mix it a little wet. Lathering my face in sections (to keep the lather wet) got old, so I tried VDH soap. It stays wet much longer, but still not quite long enough (even when I mix it to a slightly over saturated consistancy). I also noticed that the VDH makes the razor glide a whole lot better than the Williams (which provided about as much glide as plain water).
So now I'm thinking I should try "better" soaps or creams. The SRD soap, Tabac Soap, and Poraso Soap / Cream, and KMF cream seem to get good reviews and aren't super pricey. I'd prefer to stick with soaps for cost reasons, and so I can face-lather - unless the creams give a lot more lubrication / cushion.
I don't want to buy all the soaps / creams above, or go to the pricey end of the spectrum (T&T, MWF, etc) if I can help it. What do you recommend ?

check out the reviews secion of the site.
There are some very good write-ups of the various creams and soaps out there.
Personally, I am using Body Shop Maca Root shave cream and like it a lot.

if you ask 20 shavers what their favorite soap is, you are likely to get 30 different answers
personally, i make uber-lather with my homemade soap (or mamabear's) and either proraso or tabac cream, with a little glycerine.

Thanked: 2+1 to the Mama Bear's recommendation. I picked up a couple pucks from her website and it made my shave a lot better, plus the fragrance is just incredible. Lather lasts a long time, and the price more than fair for a sizable 4oz. puck that seems it will last for at least a few months shaving daily.
Tons of good soaps and creams out there though, you just have to find something you get along with well I went with Mama Bear's because I saw so many people swearing by it here and I wanted to be able to melt my soap into a small dish without messing it up.

Soap/Cream Recommendations
Hello, JohnG10:
Since you are trying stay on the less expensive, though quality soaps, I will agree with some of the other gentlemen here and recommend Mama Bear. I use Mama Bear's unscented and love it. Also, I am quite fond of SRD's unscented soap, and have it in the rotation, as well.
Regards,
Obie
