Thanked: 2Warped Dovo
I have found a few comments on SRP and other sites saying that some Dovo blades are coming brand new, and warped. I have had my Dovo (first straight razor ever) about six weeks now, but, haven't yet gotten a "great" shave out of it. I ordered a 30x jewelers' loupe online, so that I could give honing a whirl one day.. Well, I looked at my Dovo, and it only has a beveled edge for half of one side, and the "opposite" side has the reverse sharpened. I VERY carefully ran the blade a few laps on a Norton 8K waterstone, and it leaves water behind in this type pattern. It's super hard to see with the naked eye, let alone a picture. But, on the stone, with the blade flat, I essentially have an arch, then flip it over, and I have a letter "U". I know these are probably expressed as concave and convex or some term I'm not familiar with, but, you get the point. It's like its sharp on the center of one side, then sharp on the outside edges of the other side.
How in the world can something like this be fixed? Is it possible? Is it worth it? The type of razor is:
Dovo 'Best Quality' (plastic scales)
5/8 blade
Half Hollow
Would writing a letter to Dovo be a good place to start? Is that effective?

Thanked: 13245Vendor first
then Dovo
Then if all that fails it is time to embrace the challenge of honing a warped blade... This is exactly what the X stroke was designed for ..
Without the blade in my hand I have to take your observation as fact that the blade is actually warped, though rare...

to tell the truth warped blades are not uncommen.in fact if you pay a lot attention you will end up hard to find unwarped blade.in case there is alittle warping shouldnt be so much trouble to fix by honing.if its similar to figure 8 then that is a pita to hone.contact vendor about your problem is a good idea and see what happen.if you run out of luck then let us know. Someone can take a look your blade.gl

Alex,
My Dovo best 5/8 half-hollow has a slight warp at the toe.
Using appropriate X-strokes worked a treat when honing it
Have fun !
best regards

I agree you should contact the vendor first. However, if you would like another sets of eyes on your razor send it off to be honed.
Personally, and this is just me, I would send it off to a honer unless the warp is extremely obvious. Then, the honer can either confirm it's warped and I'm not just seeing things, or, the honer returns it nice and sharp ready to cut some whiskers.
If it turns out the razor is warped then I can contact the vendor knowing that more than one person has confirmed the razor is warped.
If the razor is returned shave ready this will have corrected the honing error attempted and will give you a new edge to set your standards to for future honing.

I would recommend contacting the vendor before you do any more honing. That might void the return policy. Aside from that, if you are new to honing, I would not start with a warped blade. Learning to hone a proper blade is difficult enough.

I had the same thing happen to me.
Warped blade and I didn't manage to get trough to Dovo, so I just gave it up. I will take it as a challenge when I get better at honing

+++1 on the advice offered in the previous posts. Check with the vendor...They may well be wiling to replace the razor with a new one that is not warped.

Thanked: 4942There is a lot of discussion regarding warped blades and actually they are not that common. More times than not, what is perceived as a warped blade is the result of poor honing. You can tell if a blade is actually warped by putting the blade between two straight objects and seeing if there is any curvature in the spine or spots you can see through.
