I don't like the looks of Dovo's much. Revisor has a larger, deeper selection of razors.

IMO I'd buy a razor that appeals to you. You could go with an old cheap razor and then save up for a new "killer" razor. Give you some time to decide what features appeal to you.

I already have a wide array of creams: TOBS, TH, Trumpers, etc. I've been wetshaving for a few years, but now would like to try out straights.

Well, then I would go for one of the Thäter brushes, or the SRP Premium IV upgrade with the extra money

I have to say that I completely agree with BeBerlin comments so far given my experience being new at this. I would recommend a 3-inch strop - I am probably going to get a SRD Premium IV. I think the 3-inch strops make learning stroping much easier.

As far as razors go, I think a Dovo best quality in 5/8 or 6/8 is a good choice. However, I think I am more of a stainless steel guy for the easier maintenance. I am also probably going to get a Thater as well because my Rooney didn't turn out well for me.

If you don't have a Castle Forbes shaving cream yet, you might want to consider getting that with your order as you probably won't have to pay for shipping. That might provide you with the cheapest opportunity to get that shaving cream. I use that shaving cream, and it is really awesome.

Ok you guys got me. I went with the 6/8 best (since it has black scales not the ugly blonde ones) and the 3" latigo red strop.

That tortoise Dovo is probably one of their best bangs for the buck you're going to find in their lineup...it's an awesome razor. I think it's good for newbs since it flips easier on the strop.

Revisor is also one that should be examined carefully. They make some spectacular razors and you may just find one you really enjoy. It certainly puts you into a smaller group than buying Dovo.

As for the strop, I've used both a 2" as well as a 3"...definitely find the funds to upgrade to the larger strop. It's soooo much easier to use and, at least for me, gives me better and more consistent edges every time.

I love my dovo best quality. I got the 5/8 and its amazing. The only reason Wanda I would recommended getting a 6/8 is because its easier to learn how to strop on a wider blade. If you already know now to strop get a 6/8.
By the way, you absolutely must get a strop.

A 5/8 or 6/8 is fine, and that Best Quality would make a fine starter razor. Just be sure to have it professionally honed so you know its shave ready before use.

Nice choice on the razor. Make sure you get a practice strop or a cheap strop you don't care about as well. If you're like me, you will nick your strop.
