    Default The story so far

    Hi Everyone,
It's been about two and a half weeks since I first started using a straight razor and the first thing that comes to my mind is....wet shavers are a great bunch of gentlemen. I don't know if they're that way before they start using a straight razor or they become gents because of using one, but everyone who's replied to my few posts has been welcoming, informative and encouraging.

Floppyshoes (Dan G) who brought my old family Boker and Mappin Bros. back to life, was more than generous with his knowledge and always responded promply (and with patience) to my many questions.

Even the two most prominent (here in Canada) online stores have been a pleasure to deal with.

    Now on to "The Equipment".
A Boker "Finest India Steel Extra Hollow Ground" and a Mappin Brothers wedge: I don't mind saying the first few shaves were scary, but neither has so much as nicked me so far....thought the Boker still gives the impression it could take my head clean off without much effort.

Trumpers Sandalwood Shave Cream and Provence Santé Green Tea Shaving Soap: I'm addicted to the scent of the Trumpers! And no complaints about it's shaving properties either. The Provence Santé smells "clean". I'm just not sure I'll ever really like it. It does whip up a lather though...and is almost blindingly white.

Brush: I know all you purists out there will cringe but it's synthetic. I found it on eBay while searching for a badger. The description said it was made by Vulfix for someone who wanted to market a "Vegan" shaving brush. For 14 dollars I thought I'd give it a try. Soft, flexible and works up a great lather.

Well, I guess I've taken up enough of everyone's time....those who've made it this far anyway.....and for those who have, Thanks....you're a true gent.

    Thumbs up

You da man. Congrats on your nick-less shaves. It is a true fun feeling...isn't it. I find it almost addictive and therapeutic at the same time. I, like you, love the Trumper line of products (especially Sandalwood Shave creme).

The only thing I would suggest...lose the synthetic and get yourself a Silvertip brush...You will not be disappointed. I have 3 (1 Super badger & 2 Silvertip, one of which is a ShaveMac D01)

I find that the folks here are without a doubt the best on the internet. I've been a member of many forums, and many times there's the 'stupid newbie' or 'duh, use the search feature' replies...or worse. Here, though, everyone is here to help and to be helped. It's a breath of fresh air that I enjoy.

I couldn't agree more. The great folks here at SRP are the best of the best.

Congrats on the fine start. Saw your Boker and Mappin in this post here and they look like great shavers. Using your grandfather's razors must add a whole other dimension to the enjoyment and satisfaction of the shave.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Thanks for your replies everyone.

gugi, unfortunately my camera is on the other side of the country with my girlfriend. JimmyHAD has a link in his reply (how the heck did he find that!) that shows my razors pre-floppyshoes.

BladeRunner001, I really have no complaints about the synthetic but eventually I will heed your advice and get a badger.

    Still nick-less (touch wood!),
    Tom
