Thread: Newbie: Pasted Strops

Hi everyone,

I'm still pretty new to straight razor shaving, and I'm very new to these forums. I have been shaving off of a Norton 8k for a month or two and I get decent shaves, not BBS in all areas, but pretty good nonetheless. I am wanting to get a closer shave so I bought a Shapton 16k, and some of the green CrOx 0.5 micron paste off of SRD. My question is how do I use the paste effectively? I looked over some of the articles in the wiki portion of this site, but I'm still unclear about what to expect and how to go about pasting my strop (I have two and I know I shouldn't paste my daily strop).

Also, any info or recommendations about alternative pastes that may be a better value would be appreciated.

To apply your crox, just make some X's on the strop and then kinda burnish it a bit. You want some of the leather to show through, you don't want it to look like a billiard table.

To use it, after honing or when your blade begins to pull just a bit, do ten light laps and then go over to your regular strop. When I do a crox touchup, I hit the linen first for about forty laps, then ten light on the crox strop, followed by fifty or sixty on the regular strop.

you have choose tough road buying shapton 16 k.
This is what i would say.
try buy from SRD their diamond past set.
it should be 0.5 diamond and paddle strop. if you have paddle strop then just get diamond spray.
Now
hone until 8 k norton then move to 16 k but never do more then 3-6 strokes then diamond paddle strop 5 strokes check the edge not good try 5 more on diamond strop check the edge.
