Thread: Heart in my throat

This past Sunday morning, I had just finished what was at the time my best straight-razor shave to that point--BBS except for that pesky spot just on the under-side of my chin (this was before I learned how to go ATG there). I had rinsed and dried my Dovo 5/8 Special and set it, closed to about a 30 degree angle, on top of my lidded shaving bowl up on the shelf to finish drying. I was just about to apply my aftershave balm when I noticed a nick on the back of my jaw. I reached for my liquid steptic stuff, which was just behind my shaving bowl, and as I picked it up, knocked my razor off and watched in helpless horror as it fell about 2 feet to the counter top, where it landed with a clang.

Fortunately, no harm done, I suppose because I had closed it enough that the edge couldn't have made contact with anything, and I probably just got lucky that it didn't bend or warp when it hit, but MAN was I in dread until I checked it out. I've had better shaves with it since then, so I know for sure it wasn't damaged, but I'll remember that Sunday shave for a while.

A happy ending to what could have been a bad situation. Personally I haven't dropped or dinged any of my razors, but be assured that you are not the only one who has done so.

Naw. You got lucky that it didn't SHATTER, because generally that's what they do when dropped!

Phew! A lucky escape there..!

I fumbled my 15/16 Wacker a while back, and I took the cut as I'd have rather have had the cut than damaged the razor..!

Thats how you know you have a problem. You'd rather slash your hand up than sacrifice a razor lol..!

Yeah, I hear you, and I usually have quick enough reflexes that most of the time if I knock something off a shelf I can catch it before it hits. I just couldn't get my left hand there in time.

Thankfully, I can relegate that one to the "lucky escape, lesson learned" file.

Many of us have had that issue. Mine was probably the worst. I had recently received my new Livi-Takeda Damascus and had finished shaving and had it propped open on the counter and as I was putting away my big, heavy ceramic shave dish the thing flew out of my wet hands like it was jet propelled and right into you guessed it. It left an edge covered with microchips. Luckily I was able to repair it myself. I learned never to handle razors and like with wet hands. An expensive lesson.

Never try to catch a falling razor.

A $20.00 throw rug is a cheap necessity for this hobby, even if your wife makes you roll it up and put it away when you're done.

If you don't have hones, that is the least you are going to pay for a damaged razor - it goes up from there!

Damn! And with a Takeda! Man, what can one say? Damn! So, so pleased you were able to fix this.

I often dry my hands. Even sometimes they seem dry, but if it does not feel riight I will further us my T-shirt or pants.

And frankly, if I dropped my Takeda or Zowada, I'd damn well grab for it. No doubt in my mind! I'm with Stubear here. Yeah, I have a problem!

Well, this can happen Durhanpiper. Mostly we can't do much when the razor was not in our hands. Live and learn. Be careful with that blade.
