Oil
What oil is best to use on my razor? I`m applying a little after each shave so as never to leave it exposed and unprotected. I`m using a littl linseed oil from my workshop the moment because it`s all I have but it`s not suitable really, it leaves a bit of a residue. Any suggestions?

I would suggest either mineral oil or camelia oil. Both are suitable for razors and wont leave a residue.
I've also used WD40 in the past, and that works well too..!

If I'm not mistaken the "40" refers to the 40th different formulation that they tinkered with before they found the correct mix.
I could very well be mistaken though... I often am... I blame that on the Evan Williams Single Cask Reserve (Very highly rated by me by the way... well worth the price if you like bourbon)

Vaseline. Cheap, easy to find, and very protective. It won't dry out either if you leave it on your razor a long time between shaves.

Thanked: 39I live in a very humid area and was oiling my razors up.
One day I found a very nice wood cigar box. I sealed it with polyurathan on the outside and left the inside natural. Added some desicant packets and have not oiled a razor since.
The wood and desicant together absorb moisture. No rust or water spots on any of my razors.
I put the desicant packets on a tin pan and put them in the oven once a month to make sure they stay dry. Or I put the box and desicant out in the sun open minus the razors, for 30 minutes once a month.
Been thinking of making another one with partitions and velvet line it that is easy to do.

For short turn storage just about any oil will protect. The issue is if the oil gets on your skin will it cause issues for you or is it difficult to get off the razor. Certain oils can also go rancid but for short term that's probably not an issue.

Thanked: 1936I personally use synthetic (key IMO) gun oils. Since I always wipe the blade clean & strop before use, there is no issue to skin irritation. I have also used the above mentioned WD-40 as well, but if you have a large rotation of razors it can be lacking. For short term (1-3 days) it's great. Some don't oil at all...which I have been known to do if I'm using the same razor the following day. Your climate is very important with this topic that comes up monthly...

Yep fourtieth formulation, I love little facts like that
I like the sound of a bit of vaseline actually. That`s definitely not going to cause skin problems is it, I don`t think I`ll be using my gun oil eeergh lol It would be nice to use something scented but I suppose that would be full of all sorts then. Vaseline I think Can I ask you another question while I`m here? My other thread has gone a bit stale... When applying paste, that wants to go on the leather side of a strop right?
Ooooooh I used to love burbon Had to give up drinking though before it killed me, haven`t drunk in three years and proud of it Plus I have to neck a lot of morphine every day and that would be a very deadly combination! lol I won`t even use a mouthwash that has alcohol in it.....
