Thanked: 240This site is ruining me...
I am a newbie having just puchased my first straight two weeks ago, then I found this site and found out I needed to get the razor professionally honed before using it. Needless to say I planned on doing this. Right up to the point the razor was delivered and I saw it for the first time. Well no major cuts/nicks but then I saw the light and sent it off to Lynn so that I could see what a proper shave should be instead of a adequate one. But, to the point of this thread after sending my razor away I felt empty inside so I purchased a DE off the classifieds here to fill the gap it worked, for one shave, don't get me wrong the shave was great, smoother than my first with the straight but it was too much like a fusion and was not the amazing feeling I got with the straight. So now I have been checking out the classifieds and vendors here everyday and just bought my second razor and spent $150 on creams/soaps and supplies. I figure it might take a week or so for Lynn to hone my first and didn't feel like waiting so the second one will come pre-sharpened. Anyway just hoping one of the two razors get here before I feel the need to go on another shopping spree and push my finances into the red... Anyway just needed to share the pain
Ps: Has anyone heard about/used Green River Leather strops? They seem cheap ~$20 for a regular leather and $30 for a horsehide, just wondering if they are any good or if they are a waste of money, I already have an Illinois Russian strop on it's way so I don't need another right now, just wondering if it's worth it?
Thanks!

Thanked: 0You my friend have stepped over to the dark side. The ADs have already kicked in, it won't be long till you'll just have to have one more razor or some magical soap that will completely elimnate razor burn, or even worse the dreaded HAD where you'll be trying to snipe the hone hounds over that NOS Escher hone on da bay. I feel your pain, they got me too. Never heard of Green River strops but $30 for a horsehide strop sounds like too much sugar for a dime and I'd be wary. You can get a nice filly strop for about $20 (maybe $25 not remember) from ruprazor.

i think the acquisition bug hits us all.. but look on the bright side.. at some point you will calm down and you'll have enough soaps and creams and aftershave balms/splashes and what not to last you 5 lifetimes.. you're grandkids will be lathering up the same puck of hard soap you purchased 30 years earlier and were never able to use up because you simply had too much stuff.. that my man is called living in luxury.. i recently stumbled on soaptopia and ended up with 4 wooden dishes of soap.. all the scents they offer.. it's not the best soap and chances are i'll end up dropping my fixation with it and moving on to pre de provence or something similar. i'll always have those 4 beautiful dishes with those 4 lovely scents.. i'll never have to worry about trying to catch a shave and not having anything to use for lather.. there is nothing cooler than a completely decked out shave den.. look for pictures of i think it's glen's shave den.. all that place needs is a full bar and some beautiful women and i'd be in a heathen's heaven.. and goodness how i love the bay rum.. i'd kill to trade places with that man for a few months of shaves.
postscript: here's a link to the thread.. check that out!

This Site Is Ruining Me
Hello, thehekler:
The best way to experience the world of wet shaving with the straight razor is to it methodically and with care. I know neurosis strikes hard in the beginning and we buy everything in sight.
Remember, however, that your tastes are bound to change in the months ahead as you learn more about this fascinating world. You don't want to be loaded with extra baggage, whether straight razors or wet shaving products.

Obie

Yes, many of us used to be very wealthy people. Obie used to live in a big mansion and now he lives in his car all because of this addiction. Run away now before you become like us.

The AD's can be tough, believe me, I know
But eventually they will slow down a bit. For most of us anyway.
Can't wait for mine to Cool off!

Thanked: 240Well thanks to all those who offered kind words of encouragement. Has anyone thought about starting a support group? A twelve step program of some sort. I know I'm not qualified as I'm still I'm denial but from what I've seen here there are lots of us with the problem
