My advice would be to stop worrying about WTG, XTG, ATG and do what seems natural to you. Trying to force an unnatural action on your nerves and muscles will decrease the quality of your shave, both in terms of closeness and comfort and will greatly increase the risk of injury. A proper pass with a sharp razor will give you a perfectly good shave. Your ultimate goal should be to consistently hit the closest possible shave (bbs if you want to use such a contrived term) with one natural pass. It can be done, I have been doing it for years.

Left side grows up, Right side grows down. Under the jaw now that is a different story all together.

I'm a toward the adams apple guy and have a hollow area on the left side. It has been a real challenge to get a smooth shave on that side without burn. Some days I mysteriously get it, some days not. Maybe one day I'll figure out what works. At any rate, I'm getting better overall.

On my neck it only only grows down for about the first 2 inches below my chin. Then it grows sideways for some reason. Mainly to my right down the center line, but then outwards as you move away towards the side of my head.

Also....you guys are saying to pretty much not go ATG on the neck cuz it will burn like hell. I agree completely, but I can't seem to get anywhere near a decent shave without going ATG. (Which is tough because of the weird way that my hair grows.)

Also, it only burns on my neck area. I can shave my cheeks and jawline fine going ATG without much burn. But overall, on any part of my face, i NEED to go ATG for a half decent shave.

    Is this normal?

on my neck i have two strips of hair that grow up from the adams apple tword my ears in a vee. frist pass down second up and the a touch up on the strips down with a more agressive angle and a sything stroke and a feathers touch, depending on the razor i may strop before the touch up. also razors with a big smile work the best for this.it also helps to strech your skin as tight as you can get it. grap it around your collarbone aera with your chin pointed down then lift your chin and turn your head the opposite to the side you are shaving, should get it tight as a drum

Mine also grows down at the neck. But I just strech the skin and use a light touch and I do fine.

For years I only saved up the entire way to the chin with my DE, and as long as I was light it was fine. Only on the chin and lip could I not make a first pass ATG without some pulling.

My neck hair grows out horizontally, so my first pass is sideways too. Its my XTG pass that is downward.

Yeah my neck has a weird grain patter too. it pretty much runs from left to right - from my left ear, curving around at my chin, then to my right ear. It's going to take a LONG time to figure it out..I still have to get the area around my jaw joints with my DE.
