If you like the look of the dovo... I'd go that way, pick up a cheap brush (like a tweezerman or an omega boar for example) and grab a puck of any good soap. You'll get more enjoyment out of a razor you really like, and you can always upgrade your brush later if you find you need to. Brushes for me are a pure luxury item.. my boar brushes get the job done fine, but the badger is nicer.
That said, I don't think there is a weak link in the boker deal either... can't really go wrong with either one.

You realise it doesn't matter what you buy first. You''l likely end up with a whole bunch of razors over time.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 993I'm a Dovo person myself. I seem to favour them over the Boker's that I own.
If it were me, I'd go with the stop/razor set, and upgrade that strop to a 3 inch. You may end up with a three inch in a couple months, so why not start off with one right away. Saves a bit of money in the long run IMO.
Cheers,
Maxi

I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Just go for it, and get a nice strop, or the set, and I got a great Omega badger brush off Amazon for a mere twenty something dollars.
I have a Dovo, but it's not as pretty as either of the razors you are looking at. Shaves great, though. I will say since it's your first I wouldn't get too crazy. You don't have to spend a fortune to get a good, sharp blade, and as a novice you may have some trouble keeping it sharp and damaging your strop.
Have fun.

since you like the dovo get that, i'm sure you can add soap and brush to the same order.

Thanked: 0I figured for the price, the Dovo was my best choice and most of you have helped confirm that. I am somewhat confused on the strop though. How can I tell if I can buy replacement parts for one of those 3" ones? Wouldn't want to ruin such a nice strop if I can't fix it later...

crazyjackcracker,
The Dovo Prima Klang is an excellent razor
For starting out, I would recommend the Dovo Best (from SRD) in 5/8 or 6/8, full-hollow as your first razor.
They are superb shavers, are well priced (ca 80 - 85 USD) and very easy to maintain. This will leave you with more cash to allocate to strops, brushes, soaps etc.
The first razors and strops usually (if my experience is anything to go by !!) have a hard-time of it; my first razor went back for re-honing three (3) times in the first month after I mangled the edge in a variety of inventive ways; my first strop is nick-named 'ScarFace', so you can imagine what it looks like !
I hope you get the same rich, deep, pleasure I got when I took up straight razor shaving; one of the more blissful moments of my life !
Good luck and enjoy your shaves
Have fun !
Best regards
