Thread: kinda spooked

I think it's time to hone my SR.... But I'm kinda spooked to ruin it. I've used it almost everyday for a few months with a few rounds on the strop first. But a few weeks ago it started pulling now I can't get away from my Shavette outta being spooked to hone. I have a Norton 4k/8k just no confidence. I wanna learn how to hone thats why i bought it.

I was in the same boat you were a few weeks ago. I just decided to read as much as I could and be as careful as I could. My razor certainly isn't as sharp as when I got it from Lynn, but the shave improved enough for me to be satisfied.

Maybe you could find a cheap razor on ebay or antique store to practice on. Then you can build your skill without having to worry about ruining your good razor

That has crossed my mind a few times..... I did practice stroping with a butter knife and a belt.. ya I know kinda weird

Have a read on touching up the razor with the norton. It's much much easier than honing a razor with a trashed edge.
Lap the hone first, then do the recommended touch up pyramid ~ 10 strokes should be good.

ok I'll give it a try!!... I guess the worst that could happen is I'll have to send it in to be shave ready again

The 'problem' of the medium to long-term maintenance of a straight is something that comes to us all

Some shavers just send the blade out to be honed; quite a few bite the bullet and learn to hone their own.

For me, honing is a most relaxing and satisfying activity

If possible, I would get another blade to learn on whilst your skills are developed.

If you send your current razor out to be honed, this will give you something to compare your own efforts against.

ya buy a double arrow I did and its what i practice on. I have that thing so sharp now but the shave is far too harsh.

Funny youshould mention GSSixgun I just got done watching his vids on youtube!!!.... I dont think Ill have much prob with learning with his vid!!...

You think his vids help you should see him in person.

I had a couple of razors once I started honing, but I was too worried to ruin my favorite razor. I just asked some people at my church if anyone had an old straight that I could use for this purpose and believe it or not I got one. I later had a restore that wouldn't hold an edge (badly pitted shouldn't have bothered) I played with that for quite some time before I placed a good razor to a stone, but one thing that helped was learning backwards from a touchup to the bevel set.
