One of the reasons I prefer straight razor shaving is that I think it is gentler on my skin. I shaved with DEs for a long time and have tried many blades. Oddly enough I am far more likely to get a nick or weepers from a DE than from a straight. With either method the learning curve has to be gone through before irritation free shaves are consistent but in that regard I'm far more comfortable with the straight razor. YMMV.

It goes without saying that the straight razor must be truly shave ready along with the accomplished technique. If you get into DE shaving a blade sampler pack is the way to go. A blade that is good for one guy won't necessarily be good for another so going through a good assortment will lead to the ones that are 'right' for you.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
