Thanked: 0day two:
...so i shaved again today, after taking the razor to an older barbershop down the street. he didn't have too much time, just gave it a few good passes on a strop to show me how, then a few passes on a hone. he tested it on the old thumbnail, said it wasn't too bad, and passed along a few other pointers.
got home, showered, prepped, and shaved again. Didn't have to finish with a safety razor this time, got it very nearly as close as any safety razor i ever used, and still no cuts. good times.
my face is a bit raw. any recommendations on an aftershave lotion that doesn't smell like old spice? i tried some pinaud once at a girlfriend's parents' country club and liked it.
i actually liked the old-timey smell. for that matter, i really like the old-timey way the boar's brush smells. is that wierd? i'm only 28, though lately i've taken to wearing the kind of slip-on shoes my grandfather used to wear.Last edited by cyrano138; 06-30-2006 at 05:52 PM.

Most of the Pinaud stuff I've used (Clubman, Bay Rum) I've liked. It definitely has that old-time smell. My preference lately is the the Thayer's Extra Cool Witch Hazel. Almost no scent, but it has grain alcohol in it, which gives you that little "ooh-ahh".

It's not old school, but the arizona goat milk aftershave is my hands down favorite, it's very soothing. I use royall lyme also, but you could get by with just one or the other. Before starting this str8 obsession I always used just the royall lyme alone.

If your face is raw I would stay away from the alcohol based aftershaves since they will further irritate your skin. Thayers has an alcohol free witchhazel and products like Trumpers Coral Skin Food which are more like a balm and contain no alcohol are recommended.

Good job on a good shave. Barbers shold know best, but still they differ.
For aftershave, I've been using Thayer's Witch Haze Skin Astringent w. Aloe. Virtually unscented and a very good finish. I've heard it called "The Best", but have no extensive experience with aftershaves to corroborate that. You decide if you like.
