Thanked: 0Traveling with Str8's
Hi all,
I'm really enjoying using my str8. I've graduated to both cheeks and a little bit of chin (to those of you who care). This last pack of Mach 1,000,000's (it has a million floating blades, a la Mad magazine) may be my last pack.
This has probably been answered before, however, my search came up with nothing. Post 9-11, how does one do air travel with a str8? I ususally don't check my luggage when I travel for business, but I might have to, seeing airport security probably won't let me on with a large sharp object. Although, they might let me on with an electric (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... )
Thoughts from the group?
Respectfully,

If you want to travel with a straight razor, it must be packed away in your checked baggage. To keep the TSA folks from accidentally making a mistake, take a plastic toothbrush case, drill a small hole in each end for ventilation, and pack your straight in that. You might also place a rubber band around the blade in its closed configuration to keep it that way -- don't want a blade rattling around partially opened because contents tend to shift during flight and abuse by baggage tossers.
JLStorm does a fair amount of travelling on business, as do a few other folks. They will probably chime in with some additional ideas.

Thanked: 0sorry, my search came up with nothing... again
Hi,
Sorry if I had posted something that had already been answered; however, I searched again for "travel straight", with no results. Clicking on the link you supplied yeilded nothing as well. I then logged in, trying the same process, with no results. Searching for "travel" yeilded two results, neither of which answered my question.
I might still be doing something incorrectly...

Hi Jason.
True, clicking on the link does nothing. I don't know why, it looks like it remembers only the search ID, and not it's content. But, writing "travel straight" in the search field gets me about two pages with lots of good info.
OK, to summarize, you can travel with your straight razor in your checked bagage, and not in the one you take on the plain with you (hand bagage). Many people here would not take their favorite razor on the trip, in case the bags are lost. Me, personally, I would take shavette type razor (straight razor with changeable blades) on my travel. Or a DE...

Thanked: 0Personally, I'd travel with a Feather AC, so as not to have to bring a strop (and to solve the problem of what to do if the blade gets bumped and needs to be honed ... just stick in a new blade.)
I got a little leather pouch from Classicshaving to carry it in & stay closed.

Thanked: 4942I travel with my straight razors all the time. Have to check my bag of course. TI makes a little paddle strop and a case for it that holds my straight razor. Great combo for the road. I don't leave home without it.

Wow Lynn that is sweet. Although with your collection I thought you would be traveling with something more like this:
