VDH is a great starter soap, especially for practice. That's what I started with. I understand completely where your coming from. I had the same problem, it turned out I had too much water to start, I'd realize that I was lathering on the soap puck mrs than in my bowl. After giving a couple shakes to the wet brush I started over, and found a thicker lather, as I went I would add water a few drops at a time if I felt it was needed. Eventually you will get away from the light frothy lather to a richer thicker lather. I hope it helps, however since then I picked up some C.O. Bigelow (proraso) and have looked back since. It's awesome and gives me a really close shave and their always on sale at bath and body works!

the first thing i do is let my VDH (in its mug) sit in hot water while i get everything else ready. - some might say its wasteful but by letting the puck sit in hot water for a moment it really softens it up and you'll be able to pull massive amounts of lather out of it.
