Thanked: 0Lather Help
I'm new to this , I just got my 1st safety razor the other day, the shaving seems to be going ok but I'm having trouble make lather the right way. I'm using Van Der Hagen shave soap with a boar hair brush and I'm building the lather in a mug. I keep getting cream that when applied makes a very thin almost transparent layer on my face and seems to dry quickly. Im not sure if theres too much water and thats why its shuch a thin layer or if its too dry and thats why it drys on my face quickly. I've watched all the videos and cant seem to get it right. Any help it much appreciated

Awesome video on lathering check it out, it should help a lot
YouTube - How To Build And Apply Traditional Shaving Lather
to answer you question, it could be too much water or too little water, u should start out with a pretty dry brush and start adding water to your face a little at a time till u have the consistency that u want
EDIT: u could also not be loading enough soap onto your brushLast edited by thewatermark; 02-20-2011 at 03:36 AM.

I made my lather so it looked like his does in the video, but my lather seems more light and airy and not that thick, the videos dont really say much about texture. I know that face prep is like the most important think, thats why *i really wanna get this right.

Like i said earlier maybe your just not loading enough soap on you brush. try doing double what u would normally do, and again start with almost no water, then add a little at a time, once it looks right later on your face, if it starts to dry to quick on your face then add some water ect. Although I have used Van der Hagen soap and it works it certainly IMO is not the greatest lathering soap out there, granted u should be able to get a decent lather out of it.

I find a scuttle works well
I use the scuttle, in this way and it solved my lather problems. Run scuttle under and fill with HOT water, brush wet and hot as well. Dump scuttle water add a fingerful of cream/paste or hold your block of soap above and on it side above your scuttle, Take wet brush and get some soap to drip into the scuttle, once you have a bit put up you soap and then whip yourself up a batch of lather. Simple.

dieselixi,
Sound likes you have too much water initially on the soap.
Soak brush, then give it a couple of gentle shakes. Add a spritz of water - probably less than half a teaspoon - onto the soap, then load brush.
Take ca 30 seconds to do this (the time will vary with soap and brush).
The idea is not to make lather on the soap, but to load the brush with soap.
You will easily see the soap starting to load. Continue until the tips of the brush look 'clogged' together.
Proceed then to lather on your face, or in a lather bowl., with the usual additions of water.
Practice will make perfect
Good luck !
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ

+1 To Russ' advice. It sounds as though you have too much water in your mix. Try loading your brush until most of the bristle tips have a bit of soap on them. Add only a couple drops of water at a time.
For example, if I'm using my Proraso soap, I start with a brush that has been soaked and completely shook out. I load the soap until all the bristles are covered. Then I literally "dip the tips" of the longest bristles in water, and begin to lather. Usually that's it, but the odd time I've had to go back and dip "just the tip" again.
If you're galavanting around You Tube, search for Mantic's videos. He has 3 videos that would help you; one for face lathering, one for bowl lathering, and one for palm lathering.
Good luck!

I can't say this enough to new comers....Make test lather after test lather and just keep trying it every free minute you have....get it to how you want it for that specific soap or cream...it will not take you long to figure it out....5-20 test lathers you should be well on your way to a great shave
