    Default Beginner makes progress

I had earlier posted a request for advice and had many helpful responses. Since then I've sent my razor back for rehoning and have kept shaving, experimenting with all the variables everyone has mentioned.

Today I had a breakthrough - very smooth shave, no burn. Still not as complete as my DE in some problem areas around chin and jaw, but a quantum leap. A few things that may have helped:
    1. Continued efforts to keep the pressure light
    2. Recognizing that ATG in some areas was really a diagonal stroke.
    3. Moving my arm and not my wrist, which helps keep blade angle stable.
    4. Gentle use of the "scrubbing" technique in some small areas.

Still had nicks and spots that need work, but I thought it worthwhile to post this for other beginners who may be frustrated.

Thanks to SRP members for all the helpful information.

That first couple of shaves where there is no razor burn seems like heaven. It's such a great feeling, and sense of accomplishment.

I think it's great that you know and understand what has made a difference for you. That's definitely going to help in the long run.

Keep experimenting with those variables, and you will find yourself having great shaves, day after day.

    Thumbs up

I would say you're making the transition from DE to straight pretty well. I think it might be an advantage. I tried a DE a million years ago and found that angle and pressure were key, but it wasn't my bag. Keep up the good work.
