I would like to respectfully "poo-poo" what whintchase said.
I'm a newbie too and my razor (my first one also) is a spike. Have I gouged my cheek with it? You bet! - but if you're like me you'll only do it once... I learned to respect what that point can do, and now we get along just fine.

Welcome aboard and good to see another SoCal resident here! My first straight was a spike point and I'll second mrbison's assessment. It simply makes you more aware of where the blade is on your face.

Whoever told you to use vinegar did you an injustice. Heres how to fix it. Using automotive grade wet and dry sandpaper. You will need the 600, the 1000, the 1500 and the 2000 grit paper. Start with the 600 until the garbage is gone and go thru the grits successively until you are done with the 2000 grit. Each grit will create smaller scratches that will polish out in the end using something like Maas or Simichrome. Have fun!

Thank you everyone for the pointers. So as far as blunting the spike what does that mean? Is that something I have to take in to get re honed where they round off the edge or something? I havnt nicked myself yet with it but I think thats because I am taking my sweet time so I dont hurt myself.

Keep taking your own sweet time about, no need to hurry and no need to mute the spike.
