Wink Sharpened SE Razor But 1 side is always sharper??

    Hello,

I have been sharpening straight-edge razors for 2 years now and I just got a new carbon razor from the local shave shop at the mall. After progressing thru 4000/8000/12000 grit whetstone and honing at .5 microns the one side of the blade with artwork is always perfectly sharp, the other side is not that sharp. I have tries to make more passes on the dull side but still the same results?

Any response from anyone out there as to what may be the issue?

    Thx Matt

You have not set the bevel correctly.
go back to 1k and start over.

OOPs sorry i didn't know you don't have 1k then use 4k for a longer period.stay on it until edge will cut both sides and have bevel on both side of the blade.

So at 1000grit both sides should be equally sharp? Maybe I rushed this one, being that it was a new razor, I did equally passes on the stones, so I guess I should have checked for equal sharpness earlier..........

    thx for the heads-up..

I'm not sure I'm getting what you mean by one side being sharp and the other not. The point is that you have to get the bevel to meet on both sides at the low grit before moving on to polishing. Good luck.

It would help to know what kind of razor you are dealing with here.

How can 1 side not be sharp? o.O We are talking about double bevel and not single bevel correct? Because it's not the side but the edge which is sharp right? Look at your bevels, are they both the same size? If 1 is larger than the other then that could change the angles a bit.

Initial thought: Is he trying to sharpen the spine edge? No no no, certainly not!

Your advice makes the most sense to me based off of the physics of the blade, and the remarks of the OP.

Pics of the razor, grind, etc. would be helpful.

Also, sounds like what I've heard some others experience with a wire edge...the side of the blade the wire is on seems sharp, but the other side doesn't...could be the result of over-honing.

I was thinking about this last night, could it be that the OP is referring to the ends of the razor and not the sides? So, eg the toe is sharp but the heel is not.
