You're removing the lather by wiping the razor on a damp sponge and not running water over the top of it. Additionally, it's kind of a passive way to monitor the razor's edge as you can see the stubble in the lather after it has been wiped on the sponge. First pass, lots of stubble in the lather, good edge. When the shave is done, simply wipe off the razor with a towel and give it a couple laps on the strop. Eventually your sponge will be cut up; not to worry, at that point throw it away and pull out a fresh sponge (you can get 3 of them for a couple bucks and change.) It really does work quite nicely.
