Thanked: 0Hello everybody
Hey there, first thing, I'd like to thank any senior member who has contributed to the extraordinarily helpful guides and FAQs located here.
I'm determined to make this hobby work for me
I've plunged into the beginners guide and the FAQ and they've been great.
Heh, there is one thing I'm having trouble with, that would be the whole resist the urge to buy a fancy razor from an auction site. You see I want this razor:
Vtg Edmond Roffler France Straight Razor Mint Factory - eBay (item 220770005918 end time Apr-19-11 18:00:26 PDT)
I know I know.. I should find something a little less flashy. But I WANT this one, haha.
I guess what I'm looking for hear is a greeting and some friendly advice. Does this ad look legitimate? I couldn't find this particular brand in the archive, Is this brand of a fine quality?
Thanks for your time gentleman

Thanked: 1936It "could" be a descent blade, but you would be much better off buying a shave ready razor from the classified's. Since you can't see the blade, who knows if it's intact, broke, cracked, rusted...you get my point. You will still need to send it off to have it honed as well...

Thanked: 2While I am not familiar with that brand, I can tell you that there are many razor makers that are not listed on SRP razor database, and that does not mean that they are not good shavers, it just means that nobody has taken the time to post it up there.
I can tell you this though - that pretty razor you have there will likely not be shave ready, and you'll need to get it sent out to be honed.
(plus, I'd be nervous to buy it because there are no pics of the razor with the blade exposed, and disreputable sellers may be trying to hide a flaw in it)
BTW, there are plenty mint, beautiful, quality razor brands on ebay that are the same price or cheaper, and prettier.

+1 on shooter's advice. I would opt for a razor from the SRP Classifieds or a new razor strop set from one of the online vendors who advertises here at SRP, if you're just starting out.
Unless you know what you're looking for, ebay is a crap shoot."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

Hello, Mudd:
I always suggest caution to beginners who try to buy straight razors on eBay.
Please note that the pictures in the seller's ad do not show the blade open. The razor is pictured, in all the examples, with the blade closed. Why is that? The razor is lovely to look at, yes, but I prefer to look at it with the blade open so that I can see if it, too, is lovely to look at.
As other gentlemen have suggested, please explore the Classified and the vendors here first. There, you're sure to get an unquestionable deal.
Regards,

Thanked: 0Thanks guys, I appreciate the insight. I'm still on the fence, I've found a couple more that look promising and from a seller that deals exclusively in straight razors. I guess we'll just see how good my judgement is when this auction closes in a few hours.
Any more advice is welcome
I'm looking forward to being a part of the community here.

MY THOUGHT ARE THESE, IF WANTED, IF YOU ARE NOT LIKE A LOT OF US HERE ON SRP, DISSABILITY CHECKS, SSI, SMALL RETIRIE PENSIONS, THEN WHAT I WOULD DO, MONEY NOT BEING ALLLLLLL/THAT MUCH OF AN ISSUE IS BUY THE RAZOR, WHEN YOU GET IT INSPECT IF VERY CLOSELY, IF AS I "SUPPECT" IT IS AS NICE AS IT LOOKS, THEN THE NEXT STEP IS TO FIND A HONMIESTER ON THIS SITE, SEND IT TO THEM AND THEN, THAT WOULD BE YOUR STARTING POINT, YOU WILL HAVE A BEAUTIFUL RAZOR WITH THE RIGHT EDGE AND THEN THE FUN REALLY BEGINS, THE "STRAIGHT RAZOR/WET SHAVING'' LEARNING CURVE, SOME TAKE LITTLE TIME AT ALL, SOME LIKE ME TOOK A LOT OF TIME, BUT ITS' ALL IN THE HOBBY
....................OH, I FORGOT THE MOST IMPORTANT BLOODY THING

I think some congratulations are in order, I settled on something entirely different from the classified
Sometime in the very near future I'll be enjoying my first straight razor shave.
