    Default Boy am I mad!!!!

When other people screw up and it affects me, I don't seem to get too mad. Just be Christian, forgive and move on. But when I screw up I get heated Yes, as the emoticon suggests I have knocked my head on a wall before as well as my fists. I have busted up my knuckles, damaged bones in my hand, knocked myself out,and finally learned a lesson when knocking out my own tooth - that was expensive to repair...

Well, after lurking and reading and budgeting and saving and practicing and shaving with a shavette for a while, I purchased three shave-ready, pre-stropped razors from members on this site. The shavette let me know what was sharp (DE blades can be pretty dull) and worked on my technique. I bought three W&B: a full hollow with smile 13/16, a 1/2 hollow 13/16, and a near wedge 7/8 with a slight smile. The near wedge worked best but after several shaves, I wanted to perfect my technique and edge. Even after several passes on a tricky spot, sometimes the hair will still make the scraping sound and be a little rough. Until I found out that I needed the spine on my face. The razor sticks to my face and I need to use pressure to get it to move, but the hairs started wiping off my face. It helped after I touched up the edge on 0.5 micron CrOX on balsa. Sunday night was the best and fastest shave with little to no irritation I have had. This came from my 7/8 W&B near wedge (my favorite of my three). Well, time to try the 1/2 hollow. As I was taking it out of the medicine cabinet, my near wedge fell to the sink. And the scales are a bit loose when the blade is near closed. So, my favorite razor now has some minor dings in the edge

I guess I need to find an intermediate storage solution instead of my medicine cabinet. Instead of looking for near perfect solution, I just need to buck up and put my razors some place else less convenient with less potential for accidents. I still need to keep them high enough out of the way from my 5 year old and my 3 year old.

Well, I will be spending money on re-honing with a lucky vendor here at SRP and in the process dialing in my other two razors. Good thing I bought more than 1. Well, thanks for reading my rant. It will be hard to justify spending the same money on honing when I see so many beautiful razors for the same price

Have a great day all y'all

I can relate coachschaller. I get angrier with myself much more than I do with others, and even more with inanimate objects.
Welcome to SRP and a whole new set of frustrations and achievements.

You don't really need the spine on your face, I shave at an angle and it is very comfortable and smooth. Just keep practising and get used to what feels good. Also less pressure will be the greatest thing you learn, just let it touch your face.

As for storage, a dry place is recommended. Some go with cigar boxes (which are made to be humid) and some go with display cases. Others leave their razors in the bathroom.
I use a felt lined plastic box that came with the special edition of Assassins Creed Brotherhood and a satchel of moisture absorbing silica that came from a tin of coated peanuts.

    Keep at it.

I put all my out of rotation razors in my nedroom wardrobe. The only razors in my bathroom cabinet is the one cut-throat and my DE that lives there permanantly anyway.

Ouch!! Sorry to hear about that-- but you are lucky that the razor didn't crack or split! Dings in the edge are certainly unfortunate, but happily correctable.

Ouch especially that it was a near wedge. I had my wedge finally honed up and shaving nice then whacked it against the faucet while rinsing. It's been out of the rotation for several months now; I just don't feel like diving back into all that honing. Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

I have a couple of wooden test-tube racks in my medicine cabinet; they hold the razors quite well. I got the idea from someone else here on the site.

    Good luck with your blades!

That's nearly what I do but I would say contact is more halfway up the blade than fully on the spine but honing angles & personal preference may influence your choice. Make sure your lather is not too dry also or the forward inertia you need to overcome could be dangerous.

    Ugh...

All that did was remind me of the time I got my first Dovo back from being honed and right before I went for the first stroke I gave it a rinse under the running water, why I'll never know, and I tapped the edge on the faucet .... All I could do was put it back in the box and send it out to be re-honed!

    I feel your pain!

That forward inertia thing is what concerns me. Sometimes my skin bunches up in front of the razor but so far so good. It is a slight modification for me, even though my shavette spine stayed on my face, the angle was not shallow enough.
    Thanks
