Thanks everyone for all the help. I got all my stuff from Larry over at whippeddog.com today and it all looked great. I washed out my brush a couple of time and after a shower I tried my hand at my first straight shave. NO CUTS!!!!!! lol and a pretty decent shave if I say so myself. Can't wait to get more shaves under my belt.

It only gets better from here...mark down the amount of shaves you have, it seems as though everything comes together around 30 shaves.

The only advice I would add here is thus, there is no problem with someone starting out buying the basics and keeping it minimal. That is really the preferred course. Just be careful not to go too minimal. If you get equipment of poor quality it will affect your ability to get a decent shave and your learning process and could sour you to this whole thing.

I'd buy a near wedge or 1/4 hollow like this one

Then get a $50 brush and some Tabac or Mama Bear soap and have at it.

As a beginner, I wish I would have started with a well honed near wedge. They are MUCH easier to shave with and very forgiving as compared with a full hollow razor.

for a budget I'd recommend like other members had said. either getting from SRP classified or a whole full set from larry at whippedog.com
a set of razor with soap/cream, brush & strop are a must.
& I think the most important thing is to have a shave ready razor. I've seen some guys turned down straight shaving when they begin with a wrong razor/ not shave ready one,
imo I'm more confident to get a shave ready razor from classified or whippedog than places like ebay ,amazon, etc
