    Default First timer question

Hey guys. Just wondering while I'm waiting on my blades to get back from Kelly. I only shave every three days before I go on shift at the fire station. Will three pass be sufficient? I don't have a really thick beard but didn't know. Any advise would help. Thanks-Stewart

You could probably get away with less. For the start though don't worry about how you end up, just focus on your technique.
I rarely do more than a two pass.

    Hi Stewart,

It will depend on your beard and technique, in the beginning I would recommend you to stick with one, maybe two WTG passes untill you start to be comfortable using a straight, and as your technique and confidence improves, move on to one WTG followed by a XTG before you add the ATG pass.
I rarely do a three pass shave, only for special occasions, my daily shave is one WTG and one XTG pass.

    Good luck

You may find that it takes three passes at the beginning to achieve what one pass gives after six months.

However, I would recommend staying with one, maybe two, passes. As you may be wearing lots of equipment, I'd reckon that a beard rash or razor burn from three passes may not feel so good on the coat collar or respirator. I suggest, FWIW, really focussing on technique. Deighaingeal gives excellent advice, all the time. Follow his lead.

Starting out, just build on one step at a time and within your comfort zone. I can never get a BBS shave in one pass, and it takes 2.5 to yield a BBS shave.

Enjoy the learning process as I found it to be an adventure and a lot of fun.

Thanks for the advise guys! You are right Maxi, the gear rubs pretty bad sometimes. I will definitely start slow and work on technique. Do y'all think it would be better to try shaving everyday or keep my pattern of every three? Seems like when I shave now two or three days in a row I rash up pretty bad. Thanks again!

If your edges are coming from Kelly (nun2sharp?), they will be quite worthy. The biggest variable will be the shaving and stropping skills. Check Glen's 3/11 tips for beginners thread on stropping. Its really hard to say how good it is - with the vids linked from afdavis. Sham's vid is very good also. You'll soon be getting the best shaves of your life and loving every minute of the shave.

My advice would be to stick with the pattern you have in the beginnig at least.
You must expect to get some Burn and nicks, and to be a little sore untill when you first start out, so your face will need a day or two resting and healing before the next shave, especially when you only shave every three days now.
But don't worry, you will probably notice big improvement already after 7-10 shaves, and from then it only gets better.
Not everyone is suited for a everyday shave, that will depend on you beard growth etc. If you have growth that need to be shaved every day, start slow and when you are starting to get the hang of the shaving you can start to make your face used to a every day shave
