    Default Strops

    Hey

Just started the straght shaving so far pretty successful my each shave is better than last one. I am shaving with it everyday to not forget the strokes. One question is stroping I basically got a kit for srd and it has a leather and some kind of other strop, which one should I use and how much ? Also how do I know that I needs to be Honed ? I am a woodworker and have Shapton stones from 1k to 16k. So I figure 16k should be a great for honing any experience with it ?

What strop did you get from SRP, A paddle, Hanging, etc...Normally, you use the other material, Linen, Cloth, rough leather, etc...first...Around 25 lapps or so, then you move to the leather and finish stropping with 50 lapps or so. This is the median. Some guys do more, some less...

Concentrate while your doing it, Go slow at first, speed comes with time. You can even practice stropping on an old leather belt if you need to....

Honing: You'll know. the blade will start to pull and tug, etc...Lot's of factors determine dulling, so ymmv. Shapton's are great stones, fast...As far as Shapton's go, I have only the 16 GS, and I like it. You should be able to use it for touch ups. You'd have to catch the blade at the first sign of dulling. 16k is pretty high as far as grit goes.
