Thanked: 23My Whipped Dog order has arrived + First Shave advise
Hi gents,
I just received my order from Whipped Dog. Larry is a pleasure to deal with, he even included a free razor rolls. I recommend anyone who wants to try straight razor shave to get your first kit from whippeddog.com.
Anyhow I have been reading a lot from this forum about wetshaving and am a DE shaver since mid last year. Tomorrow I plan to shave with the kit, very excited about this. Any advise for a complete newb at straight shave? I have read that its recommended to not strop on first shave?
Btw, I have shaved with a Parker SRW before, twice to be exact, they weren't very nice shaves. Is shaving with real straights different from a disposable straight?
Cheers,
Sy

Thanked: 51Go slow and make sure you're stretching your skin. There's a relatively hefty learning curve, so don't be surprised if you have set backs. I would also advice against shaving your entire face, at first. Just do your cheeks to begin with for a day or two. Get that down, and then add another section. I jumped in with both feet, and I'm regretting not taking it a bit more slowly.
Also, shaving with a real straight is quite a bit different than using something like a shavette. I have one of those, as well. My shaves with the shavette were quite nice, but the straight is a little different kind of beast. The biggest difference, IMO, is the length of the blade. My shavette is one that uses half of a DE blade, and it's much easier to maneuver around the tricky sections than the full length straight.

Thanked: 51Speaking of light pressure, I think I heard it described best in one of the videos that Jockeys did. He said that you want to use just enough pressure to removed the shaving creme from your face, no more. That being said, I think I'm having problems with pressure, as well. I've been using a safety razor for the last three years, and I wield that thing with a pretty heavy hand sometimes. Using the same amount of pressure with a straight would be almost deadly, and I've lightened my touch quite a bit...... must not be enough, though
