Thread: My first experiences with straight razors and straight razor shaving.

So i bought a really terrible Krieger Straight Razor for about $10 on ebay with a $15 strop. When i got the razor it wasn't even hone ready let alone shave ready so i bought a set of Norton water stones to try and hone the razor. After a lot of stress and anxiety i managed to completely remove the hollow grind and made it into a wedge lol. I used neatsfoot oil on the furry side of the strop and i think i put on too much because the draw is terrible or maybe i just used the wrong side of the strop, anyway. Eventually I was able to get a sharp enough edge to cut hair but not really shave with it. So i decided to follow the advice from the experienced SRP members and went to Straight Razor Designs and dropped $200 on a latigo leather strop and Dovo Straight Razor.

I was too afraid to strop it as i still don't really know which side of the strop i should use so i went straight to the shave. I could not believe how light the razor was in comparison to the Krieger Razor, I expected the bamboo scales to feel light but was very surprised at how light the blade felt in my hand. I washed my face thoroughly with hot soapy water and then lathered up with the Col. Conk Bay Rum shaving soap, I began the first stroke and could not believe the difference.

As promised the Dovo Natural that i bought was shave ready and also came with a free hone voucher when ever i need it next. I think i will flatten my water stones and put them in my tool box for a while, i dont think i am going to need them anytime soon. It has been an expensive lesson but a lesson well learned. I really enjoy my new Dovo Straight Razor.
