First swing at honing.
Bad news: failed to slice the beard from my face.
Good news: Slices through a strop like a CHAMP!

Thanked: 993Did you start with a set bevel, or are you trying to go from the ground up?

Ground up. Going to start right from scratch again.
Tonight = Fun with Lapping
Tomorrow = bevel setting with tape

Thanked: 57Start with a coarse stone and work up to get the bevel set first. Bevel is the key. Don't repeat my mistake of moving up in grit before the blade is as sharp as it can get on coarse. Seems obvious; but maybe not to tyro's like us.

I know you have watch all the videos, read all the post. Take a look at this post http://straightrazorpalace.com/honin...dovo-inox.html
Don't give up that easy, take it slow and if first time doesn't work try some thing different. You can do it, if I did.
Good luck! Double O

Moorefield, You're a contender for great sayings. In the tradition of the honorable Lawsonstone: 'Poor technique ensures that your razor will cut everything except stubble'.
The disappointment is still fresh enough for me to cringe for you. 'Don't know what stones or techniques you're using, but its not as easy as it looks. After you get used to it - it seems easier - but not until then. I can't recall for sure, but I think the honorable Maxi is also in Ontario. 'Don't know if you guys are far apart or local, but those members who've spoken with or gotten together w/ him say how helpful he was.
You'll want to have some sound but cheap practice blades that you can just hone into oblivion and not have your daily shavers depend on whether it was a good day or a bad day w/ the stones. Should you need a hand getting one back online, pm me. 'Happy to hone for free. Just pick up postage.
