Thread: Newbie!

Hello Gents! I am new to the Straight Razor Place and to straight razor shaving. For the past couple of months i have been shaving with a Magic disposable straight razor. My DE blades of choice were the Feather hi-stainless. I use an e-Shave fine badger brush along with the art of shaving's lavender pre-shave oil, cream and after-shave balm.
I love it but i as far as the straight razor goes, i want to buy my first straight razor. i have gone through tons of websites trying to find a good razor but i do not want to commit on one and regret it later. i want a quality razor for a beginner like my self at a reasonable price. preferably something with dark wood scales. i am open to any suggestions you guys might have on straight razors and shaving products. i am just overwhelmed with all the choices


I have watched tons and tons of straight razor shaving videos on YouTube and i can confidently say that i have a good technique. i am sure it will be quite different when i use an actual blade but i think i can handle it. I appreciate any suggestions and comments.

Stop by the Whipped Dog site. You can purchase a "sight half seen razor" inexpensively and then trade it back for another. This will allow you to try lots of blades for little money and he is easy to deal with. Dark wood scales on a new razor will certainly set you back $200 or there abouts and you can find good offerings at Straight Razor Designs.

Welcome to the hobby! No matter which way you go and what type of razor you get just remember to take your time and enjoy every step. Its one Hobby that is as rewarding 10 years down the line as it was on day one. What ever investment you make you will cherish it for a long time, and there honestly is no right or wrong razor as long as you get a quality razor that can hold a edge. I'd suggest looking at SRD my dovo that I purchased from them has become my favorite out of the closet full I have, they also have great strop and starter sets. Once you get that beauty make sure to clean her up and dry her thoroughly after every shave, and if you have the time put a lil oil on her. That will keep her as pretty in 5 years as she was on day one.

Hey friend. +1 on the Straight Razor Designs. Your razor will come shave ready from those guys and that's huge. I started with a Dovo 6/8 Best Quality and a SRP Black Latigo 3" Strop. Great stuff! While the Dovo doesn't have wood scales, it's a great shaver (from what I've experienced, I'm a noob too). Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Enjoy!

I am also new (about two months). I bought a 6/8 Dovo Best Quality razor and a 3" Black Latigo strop from Straight Razor Designs. I am very happy with both (don't spend too much on a Strop, mine has nicks at the bottom from my learning). The razor comes shave ready and also a certificate for a free 2nd honing, so you can't go wrong. I emailed them and called them for advice on picking out my first purchase and they were very helpful.
