Thanked: 15If one was really hurting for money, how much money would it require to last a whole life time.
$25 razor
$10 strop
$10 brush
Soap... can use regular soap.
If you don't ding up your razor, maybe for about $45 dollars for the rest of one's life?
Can anyone beat that?Last edited by xuz; 04-05-2012 at 11:56 PM.

Thanked: 40You buy disposable blades and when your done with them you toss them in the trash. Whatever you spent on them is gone. When you buy a straight razor you have something that will last. When it gets dull you hone it but you still own it. You will own it for a lifetime. How many disposable blades will you go through in a lifetime?

Thanked: 993I for one, have never said "You'll save money". Just for the record.
In fact, when I'm in the chat I'm a bit of an enabler....and I always get shhhushed by HarleyFXST for it.
Razors, I can get by with a few of them.
Hones....forget it. Game over. I love sharpening things. Always have.
Oh....tools...yes, I NEED lots of those.
I've not saved any money from straights. What I have saved is my sanity, and SWMBO's sanity. (Since I now have a place to go downstairs....all by myself). Sanity is much more important!

Thanked: 1195In the end this hobby will cost as much as you're willing to spend, it's entirely up to you. It's very much possible to be frugal and spend the bare minimum, but admittedly those people seem to be few and far inbetween. I'm also not sure that senior members are telling people they will save money by using a straight?
As they say, the sky's the limit....

Thanked: 247I thought I was gonna save money, but I came up with that idea all on my own. Then I decided I had to sharpen in order to save more money. Then I decided the only way to do it right was keep buying stones until something worked. Then I found out that's not the right way at all. But, well...It's too late now isn't it? lol. I should be clear that nobody told me any of these things..I just kinda developed these ideas on my own. Which explains why they were all flawed.

Thanked: 30I've saved a TON of money doing this, but only if you consider that the 2 most expensive items (Norton hone, Boker razor) were gifts. Otherwise, I've spent the equivalent of 5 months worth of cartridges. I'm 8 months into this, so I'm playing with house money.
I don't consider myself typical, though. I don't have the space to store or use a bunch of hones. I don't have the money for more razors, unless I pick one up for under $10 on ebay and rehab it myself. I don't have the money for fancy creams, so the only cream I buy for myself is real shaving co at $4 a tube. Any other creams I have I found under the christmas tree.
Would I have a bunch of different stuff had I the money? Probably. But I think at worst I'd be breaking even compared to the cartridges and foams.

"I'm going to save money with straight razors" is the lie wrapped in the skin of an excuse we give our wives or girlfriends when we know we're going to go crazy like we have on every other hobby we've ever undertaken!!! I even tried to fool myself. LOL.

Howard

I used to spend about $500 a year on razor blades for the multibladed monsters. I could only use a blade for about three days before I had to switch. If I didn't, I'd have razor burn worse than I did every day.
Before that I bought an electric that was $400 that I had to change the three blades every six months and those were not cheap.
Now, I spend between $350-400 a year and I enjoy it. My wife has switched to a de so she's saving money as she uses my blades and doesn't have the AD's I have, only one DE is good for her.
I think I'm doing ok.
