Hi Parker!
I would strongly advise against honing until you learn to properly lather/strop and shave! It takes time! You have an advantage such as my own son in that your beard is just coming in and you will be able to deal with it better than those of us who just dove in head first with 40+years of bread!
However, Mike's advice about the Norton 4/8 is sound as long as the razor just needs honing and no frown or chip removal etc! I could very easily live off a Norton 8k finish for the rest of my days!
Yes you can set a bevel with the 4/8 I do it all the time! Here's a link to where my friend Glen (GSSIXGUN) shows how he does it. Remember! What works for one, may not work for all!

WAIT Parker,
Learn to shave first (lets learn to walk first, then to run)...then by all means go for a Norton 4/8 or Naniwa 3/8. Learn to touch up/maintain a razor first. Once you have that down, then yes, you will need a 1K for those auction, antique shop, and flea market razors you will end up with. Properly setting a bevel is literally the hardest part of honing. You will soon see what all the AD's (acquisition disorders) are all about & you will NEED more income.

Mj, its good to know that all I NEED is a 4/8k Norton. I was planning on spending 100's of dollars on hones!
Cuda/Shooter, I will definitley learn to strop and shave before I even think about honing. Just needed to know how much money I need to save
Thanks
Parker

You have no idea now my friend, but I can see that the hook is deeply set already. It is easy to accumulate thousands of dollars into this sport. Sure, it starts out small with "just a razor, brush, strop, and soap", but a Blue whale starts out as a fertilized egg...Sequoya as a seed...you get my drift.

Hahah I am totally hooked. I totally though one razor would be just fine for me...... Was having a hard time trying not to buy a good looking razor on ebay yesterday. Then I promised my self that I would learn how to strop, shave, and hone before I would get my next. We'll see how long that lasts

I gotta ask "Why? Didn't he think the first cut was bad enough?" Roger I commend you for having a go at using a proper razor for the first time. It is a big, and a scary step first time around. I also commend your humility in that you are following your son into this way of shaving. It is obvious where your son gets his well mannered attitude from. He is a credit to you and I'm sure you are proud of him.
Well it's also in the middle of the desert, it's hot, regardless of all the bright lights and the pretty water features that are also lit up at night, it's a bit of a one horse town by day. You can buy Fosters there, but of coarse no Australian worth his salt drinks that horse piddle anyway. If you tip the waitress' decently you get lots of free drinks so long as you're feeding the one armed bandits as well. The people are friendly and if you know where to go you can get a free brekky in the morning. And yes, I've been there...Amongst a lot of other places in the US.

Yep it sure is hot here! Last week it hit 120 degrees downtown. Luckily I live in the north so it was about 7 degrees cooler, but still a heat warning. And yes, daddy is gonna try again, despite all of the cuts!
