Thanked: 1Saftey Razors
Howdy,
I just picked up str8 razor shaving, and while I was rsearching and looking for a razor I started shaving with a saftey razor. Right now I'm still learning, so I only shave a little with a str8 and finish off with the saftey razor. How long should the blades on a saftey razor last. cause I don't feel like it is lasting me very long. I feel like I only geta few good shaves then it all of a sudden the next shave sucks. How long should I expect the razor to last?
Thanks & Gig 'Em

I find most DE blades to last between 3-5 shaves. What blades are you using?

John is spot on. There are many DE manufacturers and each seems to have its own life subject to the thickness of the shaved wiskers. Get some samples and see what works best for you. Several vendors have samples and you will learn as you work thru them. Good luck!

Thanked: 1Alright that sounds about right. right now I am just using the DE blades I got at Sally's Beauty supply
The only places I know of with out that I can get them with out ordering them online is walmart, sally's, and the Art of Shaving store when I go home to San Antonio. Any others that might be local?

Thanked: 0I like to order the Derby Plus blades off of amazon. I got 200 blades and a stick of Arko for 11 bucks.
I've tried just about every brand of razor out there, Feather, Shark etc... and the Derby's seem to be the best bet so far. I get about 6-7 shaves out of them, and could probably get more, but I've never really pushed my luck.

Thanked: 1195As a general rule I use a blade three times. I've done some experimentation and some blades can last longer, but I find the comfort really starts to drop off and you're really only doing it to "prove" that you can. Three uses is forgivable when the price per blade is around $0.20 compared to a $3.00 cartridge blade

It's hard to find them in most stores but I have seen them at one or two. But they where store branded I.E. Target brand or Meijer brand. No idea what the quality would be.
I got a variety pack off ebay and found the BLUEBIRD Razor Blades Hi Stainless Platinum work best for me. I use them about 3-6 times depending on how long I let my stubble get. Then my wife steels one and uses it for a few weeks. ( she likes me to dull them up a bit first for some reason )

Thanked: 0I really think your best bet will be served by actually ordering a decent razor. I've tried the ones you buy in the store, and they just don't really cut it for me. Even a new razor from those brands will pull and it just doesnt feel like I'm getting a very good shave. To each their own though. Not only that, you're highly overpaying buy purchasing from a brick and mortar store.
Like I said in other threads...Amazon is your best friend when it comes to things of this nature. I can get 200 blades and a stick of arko, or a tube of derby cream for next to 12 bucks, and get free supersaver shipping on top of that. That's basically .16 per razor. Enough razors to last you about two years, for that matter.
