Thanked: 0Dovo Silver Steel Suitable For Beginner?
Hi guys,
New here. I've been using a DE razor for years and I think I'm ready to take the plunge into a SR shave. I've been looking around and really like the Dovo Silver Steel (aka Ebenholz) but I noticed it's a 5/8" and the beginner guide suggests using a 6/8".
1) Do you think the size difference will matter much for a newbie?
2) Do you think this is a suitable razor for a beginner?
I tried to view the razor reviews but it says I don't have access - could be because I just activated this account.
Once I settle on a razor, I just have to convince the wife to let me spend the cash on it. She doesn't understand and thinks disposable razors should be good enough.
Thanks!Last edited by bkendall; 08-14-2012 at 07:25 PM. Reason: Typo

The 5/8" is very good, but most experienced shavers eventually prefer a 6/8" or larger extra hollow ground razor.
You could learn on the larger razor just as well as the 5/8" and will probably be glad you started with the larger size.
Enjoy.

Thanked: 94Ahhh the 5/8 Ebenholz....my own personal struggle to master that blade left me PIFing it to a friend. He can use it with out problem, but while I had it....it was nick named the "mosquito" due to its love of blood...
Its the only blade I could never tame. You will either love it or hate it, but it will show up F'in sharp if Lynn hones it.

Thanked: 0Hmm... Maybe I'd be better off with the regular Dovo Best Quality 6/8" then...

Just tell your wife, no more make-up items of any kind. Au natural is good enough.
Any quality razor will do just fine. Just get what you like. Just make sure it's shave ready before use.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Don't think 1/8" will matter to a newb or an expert.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

That exact razor was my first. It was excellent, and mine was honed by that Lynn guy everyone keeps talking about... (who is that guy, anyways?).
Anywho, hope this helped and that my sarcasm was found by the powers that be. Good luck!

A Dovo BQ 6/8 from Lynn/SRD was my first (and so far only) brand new razor when I was getting started a few months, and a lifetime, ago.
As you have no doubt read there are many factors/variables in learning how to shave with a straight - but without an edge prepared by a pro the journey will be that much longer/more frustrating and shall we say...."pink lathered"...
Blade size is a factor, but so are jimps, tang & tail size/length and blade length to name a few. .And the only way to find out what works for you is to wade in to the pool (some would call it whirlpool) that is Straight Razor shaving.
You are in the best place for advice, feedback and general information but at the end (or beginning) of the day it will be you, the razor, the mirror and your support equipment that you know about from wet shaving/DE.
A big part of what I like about shaving with a Str8 is the variety...this also means that you end up with lots of razors...but RAD is another subject.
For me, it was razors prepped by Lynn and Glen (gssixgun) and other SRP members like Pete S and Chris E that started making it all work.
Added to that was this great Stretching post: http://straightrazorpalace.com/shavi...in-how-do.html by Mikael that got me from fear of the chin to mastering it...
Like everything else I had viewed a lot of info on the mechanics of shaving with a straight...but doing it and then viewing some of the info made it click.
My only regret is not starting sooner...
