    I figure that once I've polished the blade with Flitz, then wiped off swarf until the white rag stays white, that's a clean blade.

    Soap and water will lift just about anything off a surface and flush it away. Let's not forget good old soap and water, and maybe a retired toothbrush in the pivot.

    Soaking in alcohol does absolutely nothing to any germs. It's the process of the alcohol evaporating off of the blade that kills the harmful stuff.
