    newone,

Shaving with a straight is like a lot of activities; there is a time when you couldn't do something, then there comes the time that you can do it - the bit in the middle, the learning phase always seems to become a bit fuzzy in hindsight !

For me, like a lot of people, I struggled at first with the learning curve - the shave, stropping etc, and then one day after about a month or so, everything suddenly came together ..BANG.. like magic !

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

    Hi russ
I have just been watching the video posted on here for using a strop and noticed that I was doing this wrong as I was doing it as per a video seen on U Tube this buggered up the edge on my razor I have been stropping the correct way and the difference to my razor is unbelievable will continue to work on the blade while my face heals from the razor burns and cuts and soreness have now also brought some face food and preshave oil so hopfullly this will make my shaving much better also went to the barbers fro some advice he told me that no one should use a straight cut razor on themselves which is wrong but he did use an natural stone on my face and then so after shave an then some talc which has helped

    Hi Leslie,

You mention experimenting with your towel temperatures... if your face is irritated, try a cold water shave. The hot towels are to hydrate your whiskers, and that is an important factor. Many of us shave after our showers--I do this, generally--which also gets our whiskers nice and moist. I don't let my face dry after the shower, then keep it wet with cold water only, make my lather with cold water, etc. The old shaving wisdom is, in fact, that the cold-water shave is best. It certainly is less irritating to the skin.

    Best wishes
