Best of Greetings, Leslie.
Bravo for taking the plunge. The best shaves of your life will soon follow.
I wasn't really clear on your razor being new production with factory edge, or if it was professionally honed. As you'll read - factory edges are almost never really shave ready. I'm hoping some nearby members could give you a hand with that edge. If not - its very much worth the cost of professional honing. You also have members from other sites which also offer free honing in the UK.
It takes some time & practice to learn, but the payoff is hard to overstate. If there are members nearby, perhaps connect with them and watch some stopping, shaving. It can be helpful to have that face to face time.
Have fun, Leslie. 'Good to have you aboard.

Thanked: 443Welcome, Leslie.
Let us know how it feels on your face. If it's really properly sharp, it will shave whiskers with no more pressure than it takes to scrape away the lather--and that is the proper amount of pressure to use, anyway.
When we hone, the first step is to make sure the bevel is set--that is, that we've created an actual edge. We do this at 1000 grit, usually, then work up through 4000 and 8000 before hoping to shave nicely on the face. At 1000 grit, to test whether the bevel is set, we shave arm hair.
A better correlation to whether the blade has been polished enough to shave comfortably is whether it will cut arm hairs about a half-inch out from their bases, without tugging at them.
Often the first shave from a newly honed blade isn't as nice as the second shave from that same blade. A little actual use, and a few stroppings, make it shave more comfortably.
Like Pinklather said, your best bet is to see if you can hook up with some nearby shavers. I know we've got a bunch of 'em over there. Check out the thread in my signature below; looks like there are meetups coming up in London and maybe the Manchester area.
Best wishes to you, and I hope you got a good shave tonight."These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."
