New here with minor ding
Hello all - I've been lurking this forum and finally went ahead and purchased a black Dovo Best Quality razor with soap and brush from SRD. So far I've managed to survive three shaves, none as close as I can get with a regular cartridge razor but no bloodshed either. I was stropping the razor for tomorrow morning when I accidentally nicked the blade onto my thumbnail. Oh well -thankfully not my actual thumb. Now it has a small nick in the middle of the blade and stropping it out didn't help either. I was just wondering if anyone can tell does this need to be rehoned? I know there is a similar thread out there but I don't think this one is nicked as bad. I guess the only way to find out might be to just shave with it tomorrow and see how it goes. I'd appreciate any advice - thanks!

Please proceed with caution with a nicked blade - those things can bite sometimes. Yours doesn't look too bad, but be careful.
IMHO, it should be taken to the hones to get rid of that ding. Where are you located? There may be someone nearby who can help you out.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Dang, I had a feeling that would be the case. I'm located in San Francisco but it came with a free honing coupon from SRD so I will send it back to get touched up. I can see why some people recommend having a backup razor. Anyway lesson learned to be more careful - I'm just happy I nicked my fingernail and not my finger. Thanks for the quick response - I'll be back!

Looks like you got your answer on honing, but as far as getting that barber close shave, hang in there. Once you get to going ATG on your second pass you will notice quite a difference.

Thanks guys. I ordered a second razor and will send out my current one to get honed as soon as I have a chance to test them side by side and check that my stropping was actually keeping it sharp. So I'm bummed that I dinged the Dovo so quickly but in the end I'll have two to rotate in case one needs to get honed. The replacement I ordered is a Boker Edelweiss. It cost almost twice as much as my first razor but it's the same 5/8 size and I figured I should try a different brand as long as I am rotating the two. Thanks for the advice - I hope to report back on a BBS shave in the future!

I have never knicked a razor until I bought a new one for the first time.. I think the shaving gods do that on purpose to keep you humble.. Now that you have paid homage you you can buy a Charlie Lewis and use it as a throwing ax and it won't break..

I think Charlie's stuff was meant to be used as a weapon, but since that is such a small market, he throws scales on them and calls them razors when they don't sell! His blades are something to be in awe of! Seriously though, if I had the money, I would nab one of his up in a heartbeat...they are simply bad ass!
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Aloha idrinkwhisky welcome to SRP. I know how you feel I almost felt that way this morning when my week old razor took a spill into the basin. I got lucky though I did not see it hit but the edge is not damaged, must have hit scales or spine first. Hang in there buddy I am a week in to this adventure myself and it is getting a little better everyday. Congratulations on the purchase of the Boker Edleweiss, I am looking at a Boker Olivewood right now in the classifieds.
Aloha,
ED
