hi Jamie,
As promised, some good feedback for you. JohnMrSon who responded to my email further down the thread was kind enough to offer his honing services in Melbourne. I dropped into his place yesterday and not only did he hone my razor to perfection (which has made all the difference), he passed on so much knowledge and tips during that time, and actually got me to practice some honing (with my own hones) on a couple of blunt razors. I had a great time and learned so much. Highly recommended!
Suggest sending him a PM, so you can get your own razor honed :-)
all the best and I'll let you know how my own honing goes over the next few weeks.
Cheers,

Glad to hear you enjoyed the experience Kevin. Passing on some of the knowledge that I've built up regarding honing and general straight razor maintenance / repairs / restorations etc was a really rewarding experience for me. A number of people were very generous with their time and advise when I was first starting out so it's great to be able to continue with it. saitou has dropped me a note and I'll arrange a honing session with him in the very near future.

Thanked: 77Glad to hear about some happy honing results in Melbourne!
I was going to suggest sending it out and learn honing with someone local on a spare if you had one.
I'm a hone mister -get my razors sharp enough for me.
(If I'm really patient on the 1K and the strop, I can get it really nice for me).
Does seem like we're gathering a few Melbournians...

Thanked: 0Thanks for this thread, it prompted me to join the forum at last. Another Melbournian here.
Perhaps we'll be able to twist somebody's arm into advertising their services in the classifieds?
I'd feel a bit presumptuous just to shoot off PMs for blade services.
... arm twisting vs private presumptiveness... I think I'll leave the contradiction alone.

Thanked: 0Brand new, in box, sticker-sealed from the factory, with a single 1/2-inch stroke it was very 'grabby', pulling roughly at the hair.
I immediately went back to the shavette and didn't shed a tear (or any blood).
I know better now, some stropping may have helped, but I'm fine with getting somebody experienced to give it a once over and maybe a little primer on technique.
