Thread: A message to the discouraged

Hi all,

First, my apologies for being an absentee member these past few months. Restoration work has been very busy, and my wife and I are moving next week. My priorities have shifted slightly as I've packed up our house! But that's a whole other story....

....here's what I really wanted to say:


To the beginners, or anyone getting frustrated,

My wife and I just returned home from a quick jaunt to Washington, DC (this was booked before we decided to buy and move houses!). Prior to this trip, I was getting a bit frustrated with my shaves. They weren't really where I wanted them to be. My lather was fine, my razors were sharp, but I think I was just getting tired. Straight shaving was feeling to be a bit of grind, rather than the enjoyable experience that it has been in the past.

On the trip, with carry-on bags, I packed some good shave cream, and a disposable razor. I'm not adept with a DE, so that was out of the question. We stayed at our B and B for three nights. Each morning I got up, showered and shaved. Each morning that disposable razor ripped apart my face. It left my skin raw and stinging, and it wasn't until much later that my cheeks had calmed down.

We came home Sunday evening. On monday, I woke up and shaved with a straight. It felt just like it used to. Smooth, gentle, and left my skin feeling perfect.

Take what you may from this, as it's merely a personal account of my three disposable days. I however, have a renewed sense of respect and adoration for my razors.

Sometimes a change or a rest are good after all.

Good to see you back and congratulations on the new home. I know how you feel. We just sold our house and my straights are all safely packed until we buy our new home and I set up a new shave den. For the last few weeks and probably until after NewYear I will be using my DE's. The shaves are close, but not the same as using a straight. I did use a disposable for one shave and it turned out to be a tale of sorrow. I'm really looking forward to my next straight shave. Glad you're back to enjoying the straight shave.

Gotta have a de for travel. Last time I used a disposable on a trip, I had the same experience you did.

Glad you are able to take pleasure in this hobby again.

sorry if this is a stupid question... but why dont you guys travel with the straights? is it just that a DE is just much quicker and more convenient?

Three words for you Nathan, "Feather Artist Club". You mail the disposable blade ahead of time and you would never have to endure that travesty again! Congrats on the new house and best of luck on your marriage. Double O

If you are not checking a bag you can't get a straight on a plane. An empty de you can then you just need blades. You can get blades at most pharmacy's or mail blades to yourself.

i was sat for a while thinking 'why on earth would you be on a plane without luggage' then it dawned on me, you guys have internal flights... we dont have that luxury here in the UK haha
